This has been contemplated. Ideal would indeed be if you'd have a jury of at least a dozen, and get them every device nominated for each category. This is not realistic, so that leaves us two choices: don't do these awards at all, or go for the popular vote. Now it isn't as bad as asking the general public something - we're a fairly small, specialized community, so our advantage is that the average knowledge about input devices of the people who come here should be quite high. We'll get some "bad" votes, but they should be beaten by the good ones.
