The Cherry MX5000 Tour - Try one of the greatest keyboards of all time

Welcome to the first Cherry MX5000 tour!

This is absolutely without a doubt my favourite MX keyboard of all time, and I want to spread the love

Please read the below requirements/terms in full and join up!

Entrance requirements and terms :
  • Live within CONUS! I'm doing a CONUS tour because that's where the keyboard is currently located, but if this tour is successful then an EU one may commence!
  • Have at least 500 posts (you can try applying without this, but your chances of getting in are very slim unless I have extensive experience with you)
  • Have at least 1 year of membership under your belt (you can try applying without this, but your chances of getting in are very slim unless I have extensive experience with you)
  • I must trust you. If I have issues with anyone applying then I may not allow them to join.
  • You must ship the keyboard on to the next participant VIA A TRACKED, EXPRESS USPS SERVICE after 1 week of having the keyboard.
  • Treat the keyboard with some respect! Don't drop it, don't scratch it and don't disassemble it beyond taking the keycaps off.
  • If the keyboard gets dirty then you should clean it. Nobody likes someone else's finger grease
  • You must post a review of the keyboard. It can be a simple "I liked it!"; "I hated it!", or it can be a full write up.
  • I may limit the number of participants, so get in quick!
Please just post in this thread to apply :D

Tour will commence after riotonthebay has given the keyboard a good try. It will be shipped to him in the next week or so. I'm putting this up so that we can get a decent number of participants ready.

Tour will be run on GH also. Participants will likely be put in a random order :)

Here is the keyboard to be sent around :

Thanks for looking! I hope we can have a good tour, and I hope that we can spread the love that is the MX5000!

Wrong way around! Make the yanks wait for a successful Euro-tour instead

Holy shit! Are you trying to drive us into financial ruin, Mu?
This must be a well-orchestrated plot by the Korean Cherry mafia! Make us taste blood so we become hungry for more, until we would do anything for another fix of that sweet sweet MX5000.

Might have to move to the US for this...

Did someone say Beetlejuice?

I'd be up for flying it over to Europe sometime. Could even do that in July if desired. (My brother's flying over here to see our mum. He's my Californian proxy.)

wow, those vintage Browns will be even more smooth and nice after all the testing. And all the people testing it will be very carefull with them, so no risk of any damage :D
Was this your plan all along Photekq? To get the absolute nicest vintage Browns ever? :P

But, he will get the nicest Vintage Browns ever, at the cost of slightly more worn doubleshots...

How do you know until you've tried the best they have to offer?

I'm with mark, I am not a Cherry guy either I am applying for the ergo aspect of the board.

I have never possessed a Cherry switch that was not scratchy. The vintage browns in my Orion fare a little better than stock, but nothing compared to the smoothness of alps.

I've tried vintage browns which were exceptionally smooth, miraculously, in a G80-11801 I just sold (to Orihalcon).

I've also tried vintage blacks, modern blues, reds, and assorted other switches. Cherry switches are bland. They're a solid workhorse if you don't have anything else I suppose.

All the 5000 provides is a beautiful, rare vehicle for a mediocre switch. Lipstick on a pig. I'd mod it to hold Alps or stick Gateron Clears in it because I'm an unwashed mouth breather. :evilgeek:

The 11801 has old browns, FYI. They're nicer than modern ones, but not as nice as the ones in the 5000.

Fair enough though. Keyboards are entirely a matter of opinion. This is definitely the greatest feeling keyboard I've tried, along with a perfectly modded HHKB (actually, the beamspring 3278 does absolutely destroy them in switch feel, but it's just too tall to use), while blue alps are very mediocre in my mind

Would browns from old kinesis advantages be considered vintage?

Good idea, seems you got way more interest from you DT Euro base photekq. Get your priorities straight. :maverick:

I'd be interested, but alas, I'm more of an Alps fan and I've always felt weird about handling other people's boards and vise versa. :P

With this level of American interest, we should be all ready to start the European leg in July anyway!

Just imagine how different the tale would be if it was blue Alps. What's with you guys?

Well it does make sense practically. You got your cherry boards located worldwide phote?

I am interested, but not qualified. Which I think applies to a large percent of the Americans on Deskthority.
:|
Though you think there would be more interest coming from Geekhack? Is the 5000 just not infamous in American circles?

Alright just so it's clear, I'm up for the photekq MX5000 EU tour if and when that happens!

The OP mentions running this on GH as well. I suspect Photekq's had more American takers over there.

We're the wordy, gif-shy, IBMming, old git European keyboard forum after all.
