Huh, I guess you're right! I don't seem to have a firm grasp of things value, my apologies. :)

M122s are a pale shadow indeed of F122s. I scored one for £20 back in the day, since resold. It's reassuring to see they've not risen nearly as far as other boards in the years since! They are what they are, even still.

Since we're already discussing the merits of the M122 (or lack thereof):
I'm one of the poor souls who do not own any 110+ key buckling spring keyboards (I know, I know, it sounds dreadful, but it's all I've ever known!).

What are the main drawbacks of the M122? The matrix?

That's the top one, yes. All "terminal" Model Ms (to my knowledge) have dicy matrices which mask modifiers. I had a 122 and a regular 101 terminal Model M and they both played funny business with perfectly mundane chords like Shift + Alt + Arrow keys (for word selections) and more besides. I think I heard the terminal SSK acts the same way. It's all in the membranes.

Besides that (showstopper for me), M122s are obviously Model M so compare poorly to an F122. They're a profoundly cheaper keyboard. But if you like Model M, there's nothing really wrong with them besides the matrix issue. As an SSK lover, I dislike their size and I miss the colourful sublegends. M122s often have the dullest looking numpads I've ever seen on IBMs. They're huge but far from showy boards.

Makes sense! Thanks, Mu! I use essentially all combinations of ctrl, alt, shift and arrow keys frequently, so sounds like it could get fairly annoying fast.

Nippy, aye. From what I remember, I had lots of moments where I realised "oh yeah, you have to do this one on the right…" and other arbitrary nonsense. Blocked mods are no fun.

Sorry about that. I thought I remapped Choc Lock.

In my experience, the only real annoyance is that some Alt-Ctrl combinations don't work (we all should remember that the "Reset" and "Enter" keys on the M122 were not modifiers in the first place). I solved that by making EF10 behave as LALT+RCTRL.

And yes, the M122 got a VERY bad wrap as Model M keyboards went, as their only "real advantage" over the F XT and F AT keyboards (a better layout, despite the mods issue) was negated by the F122. In fact, when the prices exploded, the M122 were the last to see theirs go up, and they became "respectable" again only when the F122 prices became ridiculous.

You hear that, muscle memory? Use the other mods. No, the other other mods. The ones which are mods, I hope. What were we typing again, btw, I think I just forgot?

We were talking about how awesome it is to place Esc where Caps Lock is (as long as Caps Lock has a good alternative assignment).

But that’s where control goes! The good control. The one that works…

I would say that they became respectable when Soarer created a good converter for them.

I'd say they became "not unusable trash" at that point, but then they got stuck with "usable option but inferior" — for quite some time, their price rarely got above 50 bucks, even after F XT keyboards passed the 100 USD mark; it only happened when the price for F122 keyboards got over 500.

Nonsense. LCTRL belongs in the bottom-left corner (and RCTRL in the bottom-right one).
