I arranged my keyboards residing in the attic for a photo shoot:

List of keyboards in the photo.
May I ask what switches does the videoton VDN board come with? I'm thinking SKCC but possible futaba MD and some early cherry variants also.

I received the new alps cubic profile caps from Tai-Hai and I’m impressed. They included caps compatible with vintage boards including ISO profiles. You might notice my sets only have a big ass enter. I’m not sure if this is because I put Focus FK-2001 as my keyboard in my order but I’m glad they did, but most of my alps boards have a BAE. Only my Dell AT-101 has a “normal” enter.

They also included a shorter shift key for Focus keyboards along with the 1U “| \” key. I plan on installing this onto one of my Focus or Northgate boards and will post on the compatibility but I know it’s missing a 1U “=“ and “+” key needed for the numpad on my Omnikey 102. I also need to check the space bar length and I’m not sure what I’ll do with the F13 key! Worst case I can contact Tai-Hao and see if I can separately order keys.

Bonus gifts!
The blue switch is lighter and sounds/feels nice. The white switch is very heavy and I’m guessing meant for a space bar.

Pretty smart. How do you order those? How much are they? Tai Hao’s website doesn’t seem to list them.

I'm using this flimsy piece of shit 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) Image

For real though I love white SMK cherry mount so much.

Also, for anyone who doesn't know, the blank key on the left opposite the backslash actually outputs a different scancode (EUROPE_2) than the backslash so I've remapped it to windows key (LGUI) on my soarer's

I ordered them from these links:
https://shop.tai-hao.com/products/abs-104-a01black
https://shop.tai-hao.com/products/abs-104-a01bp201-1-1

This link has all of their alps stuff:
https://shop.tai-hao.com/categories/alps-keycaps

I paid ~$55 for each set (~$110 total) shipped to me in the USA. Shipping was surprisingly only a couple days. But is large portion of the cost.

Is the build quality pretty bad on those? I was looking at this one and it seemed flimsy from other reviews:

it took me some hours but ive aligned by now, its not too much of a deal imo. i think the tiny spacebar took more time to get used to

but i change keyboards so often and through various layouts that i might be not as fixated on a certain layout

Yeah, I mix it up a bit with loooooooooong spacebar AT and even more offbeat beamspring, but I daily (ANSI) HHKB so that’s my jam. Plus the HHKB-style Kishsaver gets more use than my other IBMs combined, because it’s freaking awesome in every dimension.

Don’t have anything with non-standard stagger, so do wonder about its effect. I don’t miss homing bumps too much on Model F, but that same positional muscle memory may work against me for altered rows.

If I tried an HHKB JP, I’m sure what would bug me most of all is the delightful little spacebar not lying on my habitual spot beneath N and M. That would demand a lot of adaptation.

i really cant type ansi at all so jis is the perfect spot between at and iso layout for me.
dont think i would have fallen in love if this was an ansi one actually hehe

Totally agree! What bothers is the yellowing of the case, why I swapped my own Pro JP into an PSD60 aluminium case.

personally i find the yellowing to be quite charming.

how does it sound in such a dense brick?

Sound and typing feel are absolutely original, this modification only affects optics and weight.

Sound will always be different with a profoundly different case. Metal cases tend to bring out the noise, every time I’ve used them. The stock HHKB shell is very quiet, without noticeable reverb. I’d expect a kilogram of metal replacement to be distinctly different.

24 Oct 2022, 17:12

No, it won't because these are not MX switches. There is no change to the mounting system, the PCB is still screwed to the plate. Springs, domes and silencing rings are in original condition. Slider are Deskeys. I heard the sound of the plastic case with my own ears, rebuilt the board by myself and I hear how it sounds now. There is no difference.

While the caps are a little too flamboyant for my taste, that's an impressive case mod you did there. Very nice!

Thanks. That's right, the keycaps are just a temporary solution for now. There is no replacement for the 2.5u spacebar so it will have to be a gray keycap set. I'm going to try out XMI Handarbeige from KBNordic.

Strange the 2004 version is still without Win keys. That clit is removable, isn't it?

I didn’t realize IBM branded buckling spring keyboards were still being made in 2004. Makes me curious what the last year of an IBM labeled buckling spring keyboard is.

It's a very specific non-PC release, for IBM TotalStorage 3494 Tape Library. I haven't tried removing the stick itself although by the looks of it you probably could.

2004 seems the be the last year where IBM-branded Unicomps can be found in any notable 'numbers'. Usually, it's very late M4-1s or 122-key Model Ms like this 2004 P/N 1394124. webwit has an SSK they bought from Unicomp that's "Assembled... For International Business Machines" from 2007.

Hello,

I want to introduce me with my two setups.

First my keyboard I use on my work setup when I am in my homeoffice, a german layout F77 and a Ducky Secret mice.

ImageModel F Keyboard by Maijah, auf Flickr

And second my F77 in industrial grey that I use a my Gaming keyboard, also german layout but with some US style keykaps. Here I use a Ducky Feather mice in combination.

My third setup is a 1987 IBM Model M that I use in the office at work.

I finally managed to find a set of Alps keycaps with Hebrew sublegends! They originally belonged to an old Ortek MCK-201, which I didn't really want. I asked the seller if he would be willing to sell just the keycaps, and he agreed. The keycaps will need some retrobrighting, but otherwise are in good shape, no shine at all. I may eventually install them on my Chicony with SMK switches, which has the same layout as the MCK-201.

Here's what the keycaps look like on an Omnikey 101 (also shown is a DC-2214 with Hebrew and Cyrillic language stickers):
