Fun fact: I don’t social media. And I can’t find a contact email address on their store either. Goddamn Shopify pile of shite! So apparently I can’t ask them.

As the fella once said: “Ain’t that a kick in the head?”
I’ve already a spare Topre original set of white HHKB caps so the last thing I need is even more redundant alphas. Well, second to last. Because even worse would be HHKB mods denied!! Gah.

I just updated the previous post with the pic of the HHKB KIT (which yes, includes the alphas ...). The KBDFans email is that used after any order - if you still want/need to ask something, I can PM it to you.

Thanks. I want to cover the Realforce too, mind. Could you ask them if the BASE kit include the HHKB mods? If it does, easy but for me. If not, then multi dimensional kit chess…

I’m down for the colourful SPACEBAR kit and JP-2. It’s the main keys that are perplexing.

I'll ask (it may take some time until I get an answer though, time zone difference etc.), although I'm pretty sure the base kit includes those mods, simply because there's no kit name to account only for the modifiers, if the picture would miss a heading (i.e. split picture, base + ???).

Indeed. BASE should be, as we say, The Actual Bone Fide Bollocks. But this is my Realforce and HHKB on the line so I want to be certain and then some. Thanks Laser!

You're welcome, let's just hope the keys will be good quality stuff :)

Yup. They look good in pictures. Let’s hope they live up to that.

Know how canny these guys are about customs fees? I’d likely wind up paying $50 on tax and processing in our delightful, stable genius U.K. if it’s declared correctly. I’ll order it via elsewhere if necessary.

In the past, and that information is based on what I've read somewhere, or heard from a friend, they were canny - "under-declarative", so there is hope. Also splitting bought stuff into batches of higher-than-40-bucks-but-close-to-that helps if the customs don't look at small taxes (40$ is the KBDFans lower limit for free shipping).

Sadly, £15 is the limit when customs kicks in here. Down from £30 last I encountered it. So I may have to get a little geographically creative.

Just found the KBDFans' accompanying blog post for the GB: https://kbdfans.cn/blogs/interest-check ... ub-keycaps

.. and there it is:

Code: Select all

BASE KIT 50SET 125keys 69USD
.. so the HHKB mods are included, if one counts the keys in the BASE picture :)
Spoiler:
Don't forget to use the ILOVEKBDFANS coupon when you order (-2$)

Nabbed it within two hours of the ad being posted, which was pretty nice given that day's earlier dead end. :D

Turned out I had bought my Model Ms from the same seller two years ago. Seems he gets occasional supply from somewhere, though he did comment old IBM boards were getting scarce.

Not quite sure were to put this, but it might be a good opportunity for any Australians around Sydney.

I myself also saw some nice keyboards there. But many of them belong to some pretty rare computers. It would be better if they stayed with their original computers.

I urge everybody to spread the word of this so that all this doesn't go to the recyclers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o

Yeah, hopefully someone can archive some of the technical documents, but with only a week left on their lease they're running out of time fast.

Seems likely that there are (or were) beamsprings there too, as I saw a bunch of 3278 terminals in that video (albeit with the keyboards detached).

This is when I noticed what others were doing. I saw at least 2-3 people walk in, take a few items, and leave. They didn’t speak with the volunteers or john. Someone walked in looking for buckling spring keyboards, took one that I found earlier and placed it in plain sight, but was after another. He told me the location had been posted on a keyboard lovers forum, i assume with a note of “take what you need”. He was going to take another model F keyboard that had most of its keys missing “for parts”. I don’t know if it wasn’t made clear enough, i mean I had to ask John what was going on when I entered, but if someone read online to come take what they wanted they could have done so without john noticing at all. And that’s what was happening.

I saw something else equally important at the beginning of the article:
Yes, what you’re looking at is the current entrance to the Australian Computer Museum Society, located in the depths of Sydney. When I first called John, I didn’t know what to say. A friend had sent me a document revealing that the museum is having trouble relocating. They are running out of time as their current location is set to be demolished in two weeks. It said that the society had run out of funds and was looking for people to take their pieces of history home. However, when John spoke with me, he said that wasn’t exactly true.

“That’s not exactly right”, said John, treasurer of the society. “We’re looking for people to home these items until we have a permanent location.” Being a collector of antique computers, I became more interested in the situation and asked a couple of questions. And I was more than happy to hold onto some computers until the museum found it’s feet.
So I take it that means they are not selling / giving their stuff away but expecting people who walk in to eventually return what they took?
