I am burned out today because it took about 4 tries to get it running at Geekhack. The photos were the problem, it is tedious and they have to be done individually. I went through it time after time, and it didn't work until I went through Imgur.

Just for the record: a model F XT also needs great pressure on the plates to get them to lock. I use a couple of threaded clamps to squeeze them together, then you can just hold the whole assembly upright and gently tap it until the locks slide in place.
Then again, the terminal model Fs might be firmer with your bolt mod...
