Hallo ninde59,

Yours is the newer case with the oval IBM logo in the upper left corner though, right?

These are potato pics of my two Model M-122 that show the different cases and the innards of the old case:

No I did not buy them, the auction ended without a buyer, so I offered 125 and he accepted and is awaiting my response. That's all.

But the way it's looking now we don't have five people for a group buy, and like I and others have noted these IBM's are not equal in value.

So to summarize, we have

1x IBM Model F XT, needs Soarer's converter
2x IBM Model F 3104 "blue switch", needs xwhatsit's F controller
1x IBM Model F 5291 "bigfoot", needs Soarer's controller
1x IBM Model M 1389278, needs Soarer's converter

Looks to me like the seller is out of luck here. For me, I'm not interested.

The buyer is not "out of luck" simply because you are not intetested dear halvar! The price is still ok compared to your € 150+ beamsprings which also all need a converter! The fact that they could all be defect is important. The seller was unable to sell them for € 220,00 that is true and as I expected.

My one of the beamsprings was a lot less than 150 Euros, fortunately, or I could never have afforded it!

The problem with these blue switch Model Fs is that there's expensive strings attached. Namely Xwhatsit's controller; a costly piece of kit, because of components. It makes a ton of sense for beamsprings and Kishsavers, but it's a 1:1 solution. A cheapskate like me can get by with just one Teensy running a stack of keyboards with a boxed Soarer's Converter. No such luck with internal controllers, though.

Right you are, I'm curious to see if he can sell them in his second auction. I'll try to talk him down further if he doesn't sell.

The seller seems to be out of luck to me because I haven't seen a single commitment so far in this thread (except for the XT I think), even with the much better price that you were thankfully able to negotiate. I may be wrong, you might have some people interested that I don't know about.

It's a bit sad even, because these are interesting keyboards that you don't see for sale every day here in Europe.

It would be great if these find buyers.

I agree with you, but it's like MU and you said, they require controllers that cost extra. I did get three PM's but two aren't sure and I can't blame them. I'd buy the lot myself for 85. But that's wishful thinking!
Also the fact that all five could be defective is not encouraging. That's why I like to buy here at DT. It may be more expensive but I know what I'm getting.

Honest question: has anyone ever seen a Model F that doesn't work? They pretty bloody tough. The one I'd be worried about is the Model M. Especially as those can get real beat up when shipped alongside F's and other heavy metal.

This is what happened to my Model M2 even when correctly surrounded in its own bubblewrap:

I have no idea -- I got it like that and didn't start to clean it yet.

Probably marker pen. I presume there was some need to remember to use those keys for whatever data entry type task it was used for, and either an instructor or the hapless office monkey highlighted them!

There's something similar at work, but using stickers, on my AT:

Maybe so the printed instructions for the worker could say to hit red, green and blue instead of the names of the actual mods? Once I get that keyboard from my brother, those stickers are coming off, of course. Better not be nasty residues…

Yeah, maybe that's it. BTW, if you need a Sys Req key (the top right one): I have one spare from my totally broken AT (So yeah, Model Fs can break), so hit me up if you want it.

Sounds great to me, thanks!

How did yours break? My hunch is that the controller can fail (capacitors and such) and the individual springs as always, but that the body would need to be attacked by a weighty truck.

User avatar
Nuum

23 Aug 2014, 16:45

Ok, that was a bit exaggerated by me, it is not totally broken.
Yeah, on one of my ATs (not the cleaned one from my other thread) it is indeed the controller that is broken. Somehow it is really bend, I don't know how that is possible inside the case. The rest is fine, although quite rusty. There is a really big spot of rust in the middle of the bottom plate.

@Muirium, please PM me your address then and I will get it from the keycap bag of this AT, clean it up and send it to you next week.

Perhaps the controller warped while the thing was wet? (Potentially for a really long time…) Storage can be worse than a fight.

I've found that AT boards tend to be less robust than XTs. Sometimes I have seen an XT with a bad spring or a keycap that needed reseating, but overall they have been in good working order. In contrast, I have seen ATs in which it appears that the plates have shifted relative to the case, jamming some of the keys. Even so, the ATs can be repaired, but with more effort than required for XTs.

User avatar
Nuum

23 Aug 2014, 18:20

The shifted plate is, at least in my ATs, due to the fact, that there are no proper mounting holes but rather mounting slots on both sides. This way you have to place it really carefully in the middle of the case before screwing it tight as it will not center itself. You can see the slots here:

Only the top two slots are used to mount the plates in the case.
