Well it's a rarer 88-key variant which is slightly wider than rather common 87-key ones. Of course, still expensive though.

Well, I'm not pretty sure here. Are those the usual double-shots?

Look like, either standard double shots covered with some kind of lacquer badly applied with a brush (some FPx legends still visible), or may it be that the legends themselves are painted and partially wear-off. In the second case the value for me would be near to zero. Also there are marks of additional stickers over some keys.

This ball is great, the lower shell is welded aluminum, the top plate is a machined casting, the buttons "plate" is machined, the switches are massive, click, and seem to have lights to illuminate the white buttons, and instead of using spokes and optical encoders it uses servos(!?)

I'm very happy. If you like big ball I highly reccomend, the wiring is clean so conversion should be pretty easy.

That is baller. I had this on my watchlist but after you posted this I pulled the trigger on one. I love how overbuilt and industrial this is. Also I have a special project in mind where a trackball would be perfect but this is even better since it has buttons.

Yeah, it's beyond over built. I am confident it was built for mission critical military applications at this point (radar or flight control, and it wouldn't be out of place in a missile control room either).

It has 5 bearings (which are very firmly screwed down) which were obscured by a brass plate to keep debris off the PCB. Instead of twist or zip ties the cables were tied with leather cord(!?) and there are two seperate grounding points.

If I paid the higher prices I've seen for these elsewhere I wouldn't even feel bad

The feel improved a lot once I took the top ring off, cleaned the plastic part of it and rubbed my fingers over the bearings until they started spinning again. The screws are small but the slots are wide, so a piece of electrical tape on one side of the screw driver head kept it from mangling the screws.

New bearings and or lube and new foam for the rollers would go a long way, but either way it's a 3 inch ball (so if I want to find a glass ball it's gonna cost me).

That's crazy. Seems like most trackballs only have 3 bearings. These should last forever. I would hate to see what these originally cost us taxpayers

I can't even imagine. Assuming it was Government -> Contractor for system/installation -> Measurement System Incorporated and it was billed to the government as "cost plus" (they bill the Government whatever it costs plus a certain percentage) they'd have every reason to go above and beyond mil-spec to create something immortal (I swear this casting is as thick as a small engine block).

My guess is that they designed it in the early 80's and stuck with it, but they may have also used older parts with proven reliability. I can't really fault the process, but I'm not sure building input devices to last 50 150+ years (except for the foam) makes any sense when the system it controls will be replaced after 15-20.

As wasteful as it is I love to see what engineers and designers do when the cost of a system is so high that they can justify making the "perfect" input device for it.

Definitely weird how many beamsprings end up with multiple listings, I know that shady chinese seller does it but not sure why other sellers are doing the same thing

Cyrillic, not Czech. Zbrojovka made a bunch for Russian speaking countries, but there are latin versions also.
