There are a lot of white, semiclear, milky, gelatinous thickeners that can be used.

Correct on all accounts, yet there were attempts at semi-scientific measurements; I still do think the lack of sunshine in the wintertime over here is a probable cause; scientific proof may arrive when the summer decides to set in.
