Someone gave me a G81-3000 LPNEU.

Is there a way to know is the keycaps are dye-sublimated? It seems not, as the lettering seems engraved, but still...

I forgot to take a pic of the thickness of a keycap, I'll probably update that this evening. One thing is sure: it's PBT! It's written inside it.

The L in the product code LPNEU says they are lasered PBT.

but you cannot seriously argue a lasered PBT cap with its pale and undefinied legend
is better than a doubleshot ABS cap with its well-contrasted, crisp legend.

I would also prefer a doubleshot ABS cap over a lasered PBT cap.

like with so many things I guess it's preference. One could argue that certain keycap printing is better readable than others. I find the cap printing on my black Dell AT102 pretty horrible. The Northgate style doubleshots im typing on now are beautiful.

The Dell caps are really horrible all around though, they feel so slimy and horrible when they're worn. I've never used a black one but that's how all of the beige ones feel to me.

if they feel "slimy" then you need to clean them scott, but that might not be worth it at all. The black caps are no better than the beige ones.

migrating them from one to the next keyboard.
I love how they shine, honestly showing their age and wear

I envy that, man. I ridicule my parents for their habit of leaving the protective film on devices like phones, cameras, etc, but then I realised I am just the same with (some) keyboards. I recently sold a Cherry 60th anniversary board purely because I am too much of a wimp to make the pretty ABS keys shiny

I get that with POM caps when I've been drinking too much coffee and I get the sweats .

@002 - I've done that, I sold my SAG caps because I was too scared to type on them .

I think the idea is to prevent Quoteception, with the boxes eventually getting so narrow you get one word per column.

Right Cherry models that have an L as the first letter after the numeric model number will have lasered legend. If the keys are light colored they will be PBT, and if they are dark color POM. Of course there are always some exceptions. Such as the blank models which have L even though there are no legends, or with custom models such as the one made for Leitch which are dyesublimated even though it does have an L code.
Even when you can't see the model label, or the full model number is not listed the low contrast and typeface used on lasered models always give them away.
