It's not a new idea. Some point-of-sale keyboards are modular in that way. For instance, check out the assembly that "Tiproman" kbdfr is using.

The Microsoft Sidewinder X6 is a gaming keyboard from only a couple years ago that also allowed the numeric keypad to snap to either the left or the right side.

There was some kind of weird Kickstarter idea for a fully modular keyboard a while ago. I know there are mechanical keyboards with keypad accessories too, such as several Apple ones which didn't come with one by default - though I didn't know of any snap-on ones before.

I have one and it is quite hard to assemble. Maybe it was easier when it was new and the plastic was more supple.
