resonating springs...

In particular about cherry mx switches but in general for any switch spring: is there a way to mitigate that noise and with what techniques? Doesn't seem some silicon lube would suffice right?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah lubing the springs may helps

you could insert a dampening mat under the pcb

I have had fantastic luck with lubing the ends of springs in both MX and Alps switches to remove "ping"

My Zenith Z-150 had a ridiculous amount of ping but after lubing the ends of the springs it's completely gone, highly recommend it if you have the means.

Lubing springs, like everyone else is saying, kills spring ping 100% if you lube them properly. I use victorinox and it works well for anything metal!

Dampening in the case should help a bit too if you can't be bothered to lube the springs.

EMBRACE the ping. Let it fill you with light!

Not that I dislike the ping but since it will be a keyboard for work I'm doing one with MX browns instead of blues ;)
What is te correct name of that victorinox lube?
I also read about a lube by dupont maybe it's even better?

I just found this from vicorinox but seems to me just an oil... is it this one you refer to?
Otherwise the name of that other I read about from DuPont is called Krytox..

thanks in advance!

This is the stuff. It's really good for stabs and springs. Mkawa on GeekHack mentioned that this kind of oil is perfect for metals. I don't believe it causes any degradation on plastics either.

I first ran into it when I was reading up on creating Ergo Clear switches a very long time ago, but I've since found that it's an incredible lubricant for stabs and springs, as mentioned. :)

I see.. it's also 1/4 of the dupont price.. (http://www.ebay.de/itm/DuPont-Krytox-GP ... 1535054173)
but if it has good experience from others and it isn't it too liquid I'm going to try that victorinox first and let you know.. seems also more healty to breath and get in contact with in addition.. ;)

Live with it. Everything that has springs reverborates. HHKB included :)

This is the only true option

I agree.

It took my one day to get accustomed to the XT ping, and now it's going nowhere :)

Glad you are enjoying it! Model F ping is the best out of everything.

I got you guys.. and actually I was really into being able to try a model F sooner or later.. maybe if I find a model F 122 I could bring the keycaps of my model M 122 on it and use it like that... (I do not like the mods on model fs with 1u top.. sorry..)

about the question to remove the ring it is actually for a keyboard project I'm doing based on cherry mx clears that I'll be using at work so wanted to keep it as silent as possible.. at home I usually use either BS or cherry MX blue.. no others.. ;)

We know the ping isn't exactly divine on Cherry, but you can ANSI mod a model F if you so choose. I have done it to mine.

interesting.. do you have pictures/description of your nice f122?? :)

Yeah I need to see if I can't find them otherwise I need to dig up some stuff take new pictures. The feel of the keys is a little crappy right now because I am experimenting with floss mod.

so you are trying to silence them as well see? :) :P
but the ansi mod in practice was a matter of inserting/moving some springs on the unpopulated holes below enter and shift and changing those caps?

I went through the whole process here, if you are interested:

Unicomp sells a rainbow of colors in 1x size, printed and unprinted, but not the larger modifiers (AARRGGHH!) except for the RGB set.

Also, I have successfully dyed keys and that may be the only way to get the black or colored spacebar you need. But watch out for Greenock-made boards - by somewhere in the 1990s they were making ABS spacebars which cannot be dyed.

Also Unicomp printing can be iffy sometimes.

I'm not too sure about my Unicomp Model M's keycaps. The printing looks awesome, but it was made in 2001. Likely when Unicomp just acquired the rights to manufacturing Model Ms. But the keycaps are super shined up. So much to the point that it has more shiny keys than any other keyboard that I own. The old and highly used IBM Model Ms retained their texture nicely, but this thing is just barely 15-years-old. I really have to change the caps soon..
