I'm thinking about getting one because I'm curious about variable weight switches. Are there any cheap alternatives?

Keytronic (I forgot the model number). They're rubber domes, but they're variable and they are generally heavier than the RF.

Realforce and cheap is an oxymoron (http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxymoron)


Joke aside, the red cherrymx switches are near, but still far (no bump, and harder to press).

um, there are a few uniform 30g realforce keyboards if you're looking for something lighter than mx red, although not by much

So Realforce is the way to go, you can order it in Korea (leopold store, but i believe it'll be the same price with VAT and shipping) or from Geekstuff4you.
But the Keyboard co is a nice shop.

I'm a huge realforce/Topre convert. There are no other cheap alternatives.

If I every did go back to Cherry switches, it would be to red.

aside from keytronic mentioned above, the only variable-weighted keyboard I know is fujitsu libertouch http://www.fcl.fujitsu.com/release/2009/20090722.html
never tested it myself, but it is said that it's not as good as RF. And it's only cheaper by a hair anyway

On the other hand, methinks variable-force is not for me.. recently I got my 87USD variable force (10th anniv. edition) low-noise model. I kinda like the feeling of low-noise, but being accustomed in typing on uniform-weighted keyboards resulting a lot of typos when using it. So I left it mainly as collection.

Since you seems adept at electronics, ever considered of making variable-weighted cherry mx keyboard? definitely cheaper than topre if you already have several kinds of cherry switches

I haven't really thought about it. I would need to replace a lot of springs and I would have to figure out which weights to use first. It's not a bad idea, though. Maybe I can get weight measurements from somebody who has a realforce.

Oh, really? I just assumed that Realforce was the variable weight product line. How do you tell them apart then?

Rubberdome alternatives would of course be interesting as well.
