Atmega32u4 bootloader?

Hi, I'm assembling some PCBs that use an ATMega32U4 chip. One didn't work because I soldered it wrong and made a short to ground. The other one doesn't work, at first I thought I soldered that one wrong somehow too, because nothing shows up in Device Manager or Freematics Arduino Builder like it does with Pro Microes. But, I've been hearing that some kind of bootloader needs to be installed. Do I need to somehow install a bootloader on the lose chip in order to flash firmware or did I just botch the soldering again?
