It was a pain for me to find a good quality photo for one of these, so I figure I should take some. I didn't take any pictures of the bottom of the case mainly because the case isn't original and is from the Chinese dyesub variant, but anyways...

You do need a converter, yes. I've heard it uses Set 3 with a weird pinout, but I'm not entirely sure. The board acts weird with break codes though, so it wouldn't have been very useful.
