Believe it or not, but as young as I am I have used something similar in the past I think. It is has to do with making calculations before calculators were common. (Big numbers and everything.)

I remember even more now. Back in the day when I wasn't allowed to use calculators at school I used to bring such a thing with me (cheap plastic version) and did my math with such a thing. Took them months to find out I was using such a thing.

damn, why do I find this thread only now.
I have a Faber Castell "Schul-Disponent 57/22" and an Aristo Scholar VS-2.
Even though this was way before my time, I'm still very fascinated, by how much and how easily you can do calculations with slide rules once you get used to them. Also they're really great to show the rules of logarithms.
