I have an old Laptop with weak hardware. But I use it for keyboard and mouse tests during modding.
Aqua for keyboard and X-Mouse Button Control for mice.

With X-Mouse Button Control you could test Mousebuttons 1-5 and wheel up and down.
I need a indication what is pressed down and or which scroll direction is used.

Do you know the right linux alternative with the this functionality?

I think xinput with the --test option (after you view your device name with --list) could show you all events fired by your mouse / keyboard.
