Firmware is a software embedded in electronic devices. It is usually stored in a flash memory, an EPROM, EEPROM or ROM. It assumes an intermediate position between hardware (ie. the physical parts of a device) and the application software.

Firmware refers to the operating software of various devices or components (eg mobile phone, game console, remote control, hard disk, printer) as well as the basic software of a computer (eg the BIOS in personal computers anchored in a flash memory), which is necessary to load and operate the operating system kernel of the actual operating system.
