One of my reasons for taking care of these keyboards is programed obsolescence.
A follow up of the FIAT money and the need of continuous growth.
Things are not made to last anymore. If they do, people will not buy …
The value of things are made such that repairing does not make sense from the financial point of view. In India there are shops to repair everything. From the famous Royal Enfields to a simple shop to repair only fans !

If you are interested in the topic you may want to watch this: http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/el-d ... r/1382261/ (Spanish)

I found a page that may interest you also describing the documentary http://www.treehugger.com/video-tips/fi ... cence.html

In any case, an looking at some pictures … can you recognize the keyboards that I marked ?

We shall go there and fill up one of these containers back with useful caps, membranes, barrels and controllers.

So. Much. Detox. You guys read how heavily polluted that place is with lead and other nasties, in the air and coated on everything?

I also fear these pictures are old. They don't keep things sitting around for the hell of it there. Everything's on its way to being crushed, in landfill. The stockpiles are so the poor buggers can tear 'em open and pull out anything with valuable raw materials first. From the Wikipedia article, sounds like they processed the western stuff years ago and are down to Chinese eWaste and (illegally imported) bare components these days.

Though I must admit my Kishsaver and first SSK came from storage in China. Which still amazes me. I don't know who figured out they were potentially much more valuable intact!

Well, look at it this way: at least we're bringing them to Europe. One day there'll be some for sale.

But not likely these guys:

That day I had quite possibly every Kishsaver in Britain on my desk! Only one of them remains. I was proxying for Tinnie, and they all went to different homes.

As for SSKs, I was looking for my first for a looooong time. Tinnie (who's from Hong Kong) helped some of us in the "Taobao Proxy of Doom" which ultimately went nowhere as the seller didn't actually have any boards! Pity, there was like a dozen of us in the line for just 4 SSKs! Tinnie came through eventually with another source, and so I got my first, from China:

For about a year that was my only SSK. But then Cindy came along with her powers of IBM summoning in Texas. So now I have 3! The second is still in America with some of this haul:

Cindy was selling them for $25 back then. So, yeah, I bit! And then some months later, I bit again:

Not $25! But not so much more expensive than my first, in final cost to reach me. The NIB SSK came on over a week or two ago in luggage, along with my HHKB, which had been on my wishlist for two years.

The moral of the story? Be patient, then make like a shark. They show up every once in a while, but you must be looking, ready to pounce.

The electronic waste recycling business can be pretty dirty in some respects. You drop off your old computer or electronics at the local e-cycler, hoping you are doing a good deed, then that stuff gets shipped off to China, sorted through by children, and has very few, if any, environmental controls. Some states have enacted strict manufacturer responsibility, but where those goods end up is what really matters.

Electronic waste is already a huge problem, and will continue to grow in magnitude because electronics these days are made to be obsolete within a couple years, if even that. Does any manufacturer make something with the longevity Model F anymore? I doubt it. The consequences are visible in this thread.
