Hi there,

I got one of those Model M SSK from Cindy a while and I'm quite happy with it. But meanwhile I'd really love to replace the (detachable) coiled cable with something thinner!
It's just wasting space on my desk and you can't hide it very good. Is there some alternative SDL to PS/2 cable available?

SDL is tricky. No one I know of makes new cables with that connector (the crimping tool is super IBM expensive). So you're stuck with the "gloriously thick" / pain in the arse bulky originals.

The way I'd route around it is to go USB. Two ways to do that. Install your own Soarer converter inside the Model M, and hook up to it with a non-detachable mini USB cable. Or go with one of Phosphorglow's great replacement controller boards:

That way you get a USB B socket on the back of the keyboard where the SDL socket is now. Then you can use any USB cable you like. This is how I have my main SSK set up. Waiting for Bluetooth…

Thanks for the input! The last one looks nice. Surely not my last Model M...

But: Mine needs a bolt mod sooner or later. So sending it to phosphorglow and get a complete overhaul including USB connection would be even nicer. I'll think about that...

But good to know that my problem is to be solved in a decent manner, be it costly...

Orihalcon's cables are pricey but very elegant. Message him direct for a discount off ebay prices.
