Re: IBM Model M hybrid?
Shiny model M backplates are mostly (but not always) found in keyboards from 1986 - 1987. I hardly see the shiny back plates on keyboards after 1988. If you are already a fan of the IBM buckling spring model M keyboard (like the 1391401).. then you might consider the IBM 71G4644 model M. The 71G4644 shares many of the same parts as the buckling-spring model M keyboards.. but instead of 101 individual springs, it uses heavy rubber domes to remove ...

I would also recommend to leave it in place and do no harm. I have seen the layers glued together in many of the earliest model M keyboards like the 1390120's and 1390131's from 1986. Later models from 1988 - 1999 never had this as a build feature. (I might have two or three from 1987). Good news is...

Very clean, elegant and tastefully done. It is nice to see how much detail work it must have taken to apply masking tape to the internal barrel plate to ensure that the individual key stems do not stick or rub on the added layers of paint. Glad to see that you used 6mm long screws applied from the i...

Very interesting unicorn. Definitely the outer IBM box, the documentation, keyboard case plastics, IBM labels all look original for a 1986 model M keyboard that was packaged with an IBM PC. Without seeing additional photos, this is probably NOT a clear case of broken or missing plastic rivets.
