Latency isn't directly related to bandwidth, since at least some of the time can overlap with other events. But even so, things must be getting pretty tight for those very fast typists... and I guess they're very fussy about their keyboards, too! Strangely, Sean Wrona admits to not being able to af...

Not sure what you mean... QuickFire TK is a USB-only keyboard, so this converter can't convert it. I was intending to put it through a USB->PS/2 converter first. My other USB keyboards are Scorpius and WASD...I have some extenuating circumstances which have slowed/prevented actual physical experime...

(thanks for the reply on GH about instantaneous KVM switch idea) In my quest for an "arrowkeyless but numpad on the left" layout, I notice that the CM Storm QuickFire TK would give me all but the extra numpad on the left. But it advertises NKRO over USB 2.0 full speed ( "Windows Only" ) 1000 Hz samp...

That would still be great for me! And I like the no-matrix idea, both for simplicity and also because these are likely to be used as modifiers.

I think finger keys are the most likely use, so I would use keyboard timing. Unless the debounce times could be configurable on a per-input basis.

I have often thought of pedals, but, more than fidgeting, feet are much slower than hands, and (perhaps most importantly), the coordination between hands and feet is really slow, and coordination speed is really important in terms of modifiers. It feels like you can press 4 or 5 keys with your hands...

Did you guys know that American English actually is British English from the 18-19th century? The English in Britain just developed further (to today's UK English) whereas the US kept their "British" accent. Anyway, I opt for BE. Altough I lived a couple of years in Vancouver and also my accent der...

Soarer, you read my mind! I've been thinking almost the exact same thing. I have a layer for the navigation, backspace, and escape accessed underneath the spacebar (pssst: that's why I asked if your protocol converter can also read one or two keys). And I agree completely about the bottom row vs the...

Heh, the statistic I actually started looking for was how much taller people are on average now, compared to when typewriters first used 3/4 inch key spacing... it must be a few inches. Anyway, we are changing :D Well, that helps: I think the standard spacing was too large, if anything. But yeah, i...

I keep thinking about trying a new layout. Another look at the CarpalX numbers: QWERTY: 3 Dvorak: 2.098 CarpalX_3: 2.1 (make 3 swaps) Dvorak improvement: 0.902 CarpalX_3 improvement : 0.900 CarpalX_3 improvement / Dvorak improvement: 99.778% Even then, I'm still reluctant. I care more about mental ...

Longer ring fingers? Eh? The theory was that the ratio of index finger to ring finger length was correlated with prenatal androgen exposure and a variety of physical and behavioral traits. Googling "finger ratios and testosterone level" shows some studies from just this year refute what was a very ...

Yep...but sadly the UK is not far behind. Mexico and Quatar compete for #1, though. Back to keyboards, if you take CarpalX analysis at face value, his 3 swaps are < 10% worse than Dvorak and 4 swaps is more than 5% better. Even then I start to wonder how it would affect shortcuts in Emacs (many of w...

SUKA: There is still some work that can be done on keyboard layouts, but it may be safe to say that the 'big' jump towards improvement has already been made and future layout improvement will probably be relatively minor. At some point it will be a zero net gain. This...human anatomy hasn't changed...

D'Oh: should have remembered this from a college class (though connectors were not a focus). I need to find the right header for FFC (flat, flexible cable), probably 0.1" pitch, like this. http://www.adafruit.com/products/419 FCI Clincher is one brand name of something similar. But definitely no fab...

I think it's a great idea. Admittedly niche, but so was "Helvetica". Aside from keyboard interest, I support anything that even subtly refutes the "need" to bring in tens of millions of "best and the brightest" like Faizal Shahzad because Americans are suddenly too stupid to do engineering. Here's a...

Thanks; that's good news. All my keyboards are either native PS/2 or include an adapter in the box, which should be enough for now. WASD claims NKRO over the included hunk-o-plastic PS/2 adapter, which should make an interesting test.

OK...sounds like maybe that's the way to go. I made a new thread about how to interface to the matrix of an existing keyboard; feel free to post any suggestions or links.

Forgive me for being dense, but does this mean that the Soarer Converter will not work when connected to a typical USB keyboard connected through a simple USB to PS/2 adapter?

Old matrix, new controller

Kind of a basic question, but if I wanted to replace the controller in various keyboards (old Model M, new Unicomp Model M, Scorpius, WASD), how easy is it to find headers to mate with the existing matrix? The mylar with white conductive traces is not amenable to conventional soldering.

I happen to have another (weird) question: will there ever be support for a few extra Fn keys connected directly to one of the free Teensy ports? I'm thinking about adding an extra Fn key but I would like to avoid messing around with the keyboard's matrix. Connecting an external switch would mean t...
