matt3o, what kind of mill did you find? do you know the specs re: the spindle? After breaking some bits two weekends back, i made some upgrades this past weekend and am excited to do some more tests tonight... Also, for other folks who are US based, www.online-metals.com seems to be a pretty cost-ef...

I'm having some good luck milling aluminium on a hobbyist CNC that i'm only about E500 into. I'm in the states, though. I'll see if i can put up some pictures this weekend. Like matt said, i've got about 31x31cm of workspace -- barely enough for a 60% but otherwise workable.

micro is pretty bad for strength, iiuc. it's *entirely* optimized for thickness, e.g., phones, where that's required. Otherwise, it's pretty terrible: orientation is bad (most frequently broken by people guessing wrong), repeatable disconnect/reconnect strength is not so good, etc.

yo, i did it, i know... i definitely don't think the $5-10 of price difference -- $15 for a teensy -- is worth the aggravation, profanity, etc. 5mm? might be worth it :) But i don't think it's 5mm -- you still have some kind of usb jack, so you only lose 1 thickness of PCB + a little bit of solder w...

SMD stuff is nuts. I had access to a microscope + soldering station and it was astoundingly helpful. Otherwise i'd probably be blind from squinting at it. I'm not sure the extra .5mm is worth the hassle...

I also noticed the reverb effect with my wood case; I also used drawer liner foam matting as both footing (for anti-slip) and for taking the boom out of the keypresses. Just another data point :)

Heh, i did that with my ergodox, but didn't notice until i'd put the teensy on the headers. Oops... I then had a hell of a time trying to heat all the pads simultaneously to be able to remove it. Ended up totally delaminating and ripping a trace off the board :? maybe don't do that... With just head...

re: symmetry

Muirium, if you like symmetry, then why do you like all these right-biased designs? If you consider your hands on the home row (F & J for the qwertz types), then the center of symmetry should be between G and H.

Just sayin! Reject your false gods! ;)

Use of squirrely holes instead of H-like holes don't solve everything. Stabilisers are directional, so you would need to add a setting for each key's switch direction anyway. sure. I don't really care about the weird holes because i'm not really interested in mods. And adding directionality to the ...

ah, ok; so even if you take the springs out, you're missing the torsion wire? Here's the svg for the plate, if anyone wants to put a border around it & ponoko it: <svg width="1000mm" height="400mm" ng-show="renderSvg" viewBox="0 0 1000 400" class=""> <!-- ngRepeat: key in keys() --><g ng-repeat="key...

QQ: what's the motivation behind avoiding stabs? hard to source?

also, curious if anyone's tried this: if you have e.g. a 3 unit or greater, can you just mount three switches and take the springs out of all but the middle switch? does that work?

where do you laser-cut your plates? I know ponoko accepts SVG but most of the services I use don't. The hackerspace nearby takes them natively; e-mail them the file, walk in later that afternoon, done. They even offer inkscape training. It's also a nice format for the top of a super-simple cam pipe...

Regarding SVG, it's not the preferred file format, some laser cutters don't even accept it. The best is DXF or DWG. Conversion from SVG to DXF is possible but not optimal (as per any file conversion). I'm sorry but I really need CAD files. Ok. The laser-cutting place i work with takes SVGs natively...

If you guys are interested in getting these plates cut, i forked the keyboard layout editor to export layouts as SVG. It doesn't support spacebars or stabs yet :/ but it's enough to make a quick prototype if you have access to a lasercutter/cnc. For example, here's the SVG for a 45% board based on t...

Prototyping: Layout designer for laser-ready SVGs

Hey y'all i've made some improvements to the keyboard-layout-editor, notably SVG export, and an option for the squirrelly fancy holes that let the diehards take the key housing off. See picture of my Atreus-like design i've been fiddling with: https://imgur.com/GVoPI6u.jpg With this you should be ab...
