I bought a 3D printer so the cost per print is not that bad. It is more the fiddling around with the printer and the iterations involved in the design that are the issue. It took 3 designs for the frame to get it right and about 6 for the underlay. Having a printer is good because you can iterate an...

ohaimark: will definitely post the files lot_lizard: my reason for not choosing the SSK case was that I live on the Num pad with finance calculations at work. I also do have plenty of keycaps but what I wanted to do here is have the colors perfect. My plan is to print the keycaps in blue and 3D prin...

Ok so progress has been made. Based on the previous design I 3D printed the frame out of PETG. I used dowel joints to hold everything together and make it all interlocking. I used melted ABS to secure the joints and make the joints less visible. I then used XTC-3D to give the glossy appearance. For ...

Well done some work lately and done some design tweaks and printed in PETG. I side mounted the mouse buttons but not sure of the alignment as they are slightly to the right of centre. I also developed a way to seamless weld PETG by using melted ABS and then epoxy coat it on top. Also worked on the k...

Well doing more tweaking on the material. Printing a revised prototype out of ABS (had too much issues printing PETG and joining it). Methyl Ethyl Ketone does a very good job of joining and creating seamless welds. For the keycaps the material is the critical choice. PLA lacks durability while PBS a...

Model M 3D Printed Frame
Well time to start on my next project. I bought a 3D printer because I wanted to do more prototyping work. The goal of this project is: Full replacement of everything except the buckling spring mechanism in the model M. I plan on rebuilding the frame for the model M out of PETG plastic. I also plan ...

Well started putting together some early drawings. These will be cut out of 0.5 inch aluminum. I will be building this out of wood first to see how the model performs. I will also be hand crafting some aluminum keycaps of different designs and thicknesses to determine if it feasible and creates a de...

Aluminum IBM Model M
Well time for a new project now that I have fully restored another IBM Model M (and got a good understanding on how it works). I am looking to build an aluminum waterjet cut frame and include a trackpoint from a space saver IV (as per mtl). The theme will be a Stargate theme but the exact details ar...

Testing Model M After Bolt Mod
I have a nice model M with the round terminal plug that I have restored. It is the version without the LED Caps/num lock. I did a screw/bolt mod and reassembled. I want to test that I got everything connected right. I have a few model M's including a PS/2 model M that does have the LED Caps/Num lock...

Mouse switches: currently one of these here: http://www.mouser.de/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=653+D2FS+FN&OrgTerm=653-D2FS-F-N&NewSearch=1 A middle mouse button would kill the design  but both mouse buttons are part of the matrix (= programmable) so you can put middle click on the right but...

Issue With Soarer Converter
Bought myself a model M terminal keyboard and obviously the path forward is to convert it over to USB. Going from the guide in Geekhack on the bottom diagram I imagined that the RJ45 was plugged into a terminal. Meaning from left to right I had VCC- Black (went in VCC port) Data - Red (PD0) Clock - ...

My preference is to go with originals if possible. I am in no hurry as the keyboard works great without the missing key. If you end up sparing parting it I will grab it off you. All of my keyboards so far have been custom jobs and this was the first IBM model M. It is noisy as hell but there is some...

How many keyboards do you own?
I want to get an idea how far gone I am in the collection of custom keyboards and whether I need to seek professional help or buy more keyboards.
All in good fun.

Well finished cleaning up my Model M and of course the dental floss mod to soften it a tad. I know there is debate between using Ultra and Super floss. I find that Ultra Floss gets rid of the ping without affecting the tactile feel while the Super Floss dulls the sound more but really dulls the tact...

It worked on my Windows computer at work which is where I want to use it in the end. Just finished washing the keycaps and cleaning out some dust. Will put it back together tomorrow. So I got the keyboard and it is in good shape. Need to fix the spacebar stabilizer but no big deal. I plugged into PS2 port on my Linux Mint 17.1 Box and it does not work with linux. :( I dont think it is broken because it works in the bios and in the DOS prompt (yes I have bootable DOS CD) Any ideas?

Model M, PS2 Vs USB
Ordered myself an old school model M and wanted to make sure I had the right adapter for when it arrives. Plan on using it at work with a desktop that has a PS2 keyboard plug. I know the model M has pretty high power draw and was wondering whether modern PS2 plugs can handle it. The other question i...

Well I just cant help myself. I took the original keyboard and decided to redesign it. As Suka suggested, I got rid of the mousebuttons. I also found that I had a problem with static electricity and the trackpoint. In particular the three screws holding in the trackpoint mounting bracket. So I count...
