Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread

I don't currently own this keyboard. I only have these photos of the keyboard. I don't have any part numbers. There is a part number on one of the two ribbon cables, but it looks more like the part number for the cable itself and not the keyboard. Searching by those numbers came up with nothing. The...

SMK second generation switch - looking for datasheet

I've already checked this page: https://deskthority.net/wiki/SMK_second_generation I'm designing a PCB and backplate for a keyboard that will be using SMK switches. The variety I have is the second generation, tactile Alps mount variant. I already know that the square hole on the backplate is 14mm s...

The Intel 8049 should be pin-for-pin compatible with the Mitsubishi part. But to be safe, get the datasheets for both and compare.

Read this thread: https://deskthority.net/keyboards-f2/intel-8048-reading-the-rom-for-duplication-t19423.html The 8048 and 8049 are basically the same - just different ROM size. I just ordered the Willem programmer - should be on my doorstep in about two months (joking! Shipping from China.) https:/...

Do you have the original 8049 on-hand that came with the keyboard? If you do, you're in the same boat as I. Unless there is a ROM on the same PCB as the 8049, the ROM code is hardwired into the 8049. You would need a reader to extract the ROM from the 8049, so that you can disassemble and then figur...

Circuit to test keyboard encoder?

I'm in the process of writing a keyboard encoder. The encoder will eventually be able to handle ghosting of up to four or five simultaneous keys. The encoder inputs will be the usual X/Y matrix, along with separate signals for things like the shift keys, control keys, and so on. Right now, I don't h...

The Willem device looks like a winner! I'm running Windows 10 64-bit with a laptop that has a docking station/parallel printer port. I also have a Windows XP laptop with parallel port, so at worst I have the XP computer. As for the MCS-48, neither of my programmers list that part. The read-only proj...

One thing I forgot to mention... I just need to read the 8048. I don't need a write solution. I intend to use an external EPROM when re-designing my keyboard design, and will program the code into it.

Intel 8048 - Reading the ROM for Duplication

Aloha! I have a keyboard that uses the Intel 8048 as the keyboard encoder. There are no ROMs, PROMs or the like on the keyboard's PCB, so I have to assume that the 8048's 1K x 8 internal ROM contains the code for the encoder. I want to duplicate this keyboard using new hardware. As part of the proce...

Membrane Keyboard Encoder PCBs - Experience Replacing?

1138h.jpg Here's something you don't see people doing often... Every article I've found regarding keyboard encoder PCBs from membrane keyboard, the person is attempting to re-use the PCB for something else. I'm thinking about doing the opposite: replace the keyboard encoder PCB, and replacing it wi...

You may be right! It could be "ISO" and not "180". Cool! That should head me in the right direction.

Regarding the AppleDesign keyboard... It's now clear that not only are there two versions of this keyboard, but there is a clear line separating the two. Keyboards that have the Alps switch appear to be made for the European market. So far, all the samples I've seen that have the Alps switches and e...

Need Help Identifying This Switch

Aloha! I'm trying to identify this switch that I found at a local electronics store. There are over 100 of this switch, so I'm thinking of ways to use them. I did a continuity test on the switch, and it is a DPST switch. With a crappy microscope, I was able to read the only identification I can find...

I've successfully reverse-engineered the Basis 108 keyboard. It is quite interesting for two reasons. One, unlike other Apple II keyboards, this keyboard is not an ASCII keyboard. It uses scan codes! It actually pre-dates PS/2 protocols. The scan codes allow the keyboard's language to change on the ...

Finding out a bit more about this switch... Although I still don't know who made it, I did find out that the tube is not a light bulb, but rather it is a glass tube filed with inert gas. It is used in a "reed switch", based on magnetism, which is what I suspected in this switch. http://www.engineers...

Unidentifiable keyboard switch from Mexico

I just came across a package of unused keyboard switches. The only thing I know about this is that they were manufactured in Mexico. And that is only because it says "ASM MEXICO" on the plastic. The bottom base is 9/16 inches square. The top part is 3/4 inches square. Top to bottom of the base (not ...

Nice, is the cross mount MX compatible? I think it is a good idea to upload them to the wiki. I recently came across a package of switches. And, with the help of the wiki, I am able to identify the switch. Cherry M8 - Trying to prevent key cap from rocking front and

I'm currently attempting to restore a Basis 108 keyboard. It uses the Cherry M8 switch. http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_M8 The problem with the keyboard is that many of the key caps rock back and forth, when they're supposed to be solid. While typing, if I hit the key straight down and center, th...
