Re: The Deskthority Cooking Thread

I got this one just today. Had to take some photographs as I guess it is not stainless and will change its looks soon. A colleague of mine got it from Tokyo for me. I explicitly ordered a traditional model and, as he told me, the shopkeeper pretended asking: why this one? Waiting for it for six wee...

Re: The Deskthority Cooking Thread

Have you seen the Youtube series on Glen&Friends Cooking about cracking the recipe? Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. The description was interesting because it confirms my timeline for when Kentucky Fried Chicken started to suck. It was still good in Canada up until the early 80's. What I di...

Re: Best replacement foam for keytronic foam and foil switches

I bought a set of the TexElec pads for my Victor 9000 - mostly because I am very lazy and didn't want to go through the tedium of making pads myself. So I was very happy that somebody did all that work for me and at a very reasonable cost. The replacement pads worked perfectly 100% on the very first...

Brine, eh? What spices? (...are they secret?) I used to marinate chicken, usually in white wine (...and secret spices), wasting time and money. I found out it makes no difference because chicken at the grocery store is now soaked in water to increase the weight (and cost) of the chicken. M...

I made "Kentucky fried chicken", using the secret (not so secret now) 11 spices recipe of the original. fried chicken.JPG Here's the recipe: 2/3 tablespoon salt 1/2 tablespoon thyme 1/2 tablespoon basil 1/3 tablespoon oregano 1 tablespoon celery salt 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon dried must...

That is one hell of a strange looking apple pie. I would have thought that was an extra large batch of green play dough.

Haha. Well I'd pay at least $355 for your APL beam spring + shipping
OK deal! But shipping will be $2000. (...plus shipping)

Nice knife! I've got a Wüsthof Classic knife. qhdWcKTUZrk It was super-sharp when I got it, quite capable of killing those pesky ninja zombies or flying cows, but now it's so dull I couldn't even kill a bowl of jello. I've tried sharpening with files (not computer files, the metal kind), but it does...

Re: Great/Interesting Finds

Holy crap! $355 US! That's more than I paid for my APL beam spring! At least the shipping would have been super cheap - even for Canada (which is very unusual). It was only $17.25 to Canada, instead of the current shipping price of $80-100. Well I'm glad somebody here got it, so we can see some nice...

Interesting video. I was surprised to see three different beam spring keyboards and a red Apple II. Not only that, but what qualifies as "sensitive" personal information has changed as well. Back in the '80s, no one batted an eye at the fact that every home had a phone book close by the phone itself...

Re: Suggestions needed for cleaning an old keyboard

The keyboard was definitely not made in 1973. It looks more like 1983. The switches are Alps SKCC, which didn't exist in 1973.

Edit: Yes, I found it. It's from a Tatung TVT6600A terminal from late 1983/ early 1984.

It's a GE Profile. What a piece of shit. It seems to be programmed to avoid burning out the cheap heating elements rather than for proper cooking. Everything has 2 temperatures: maximum and off - and it decides when to turn them on and off. It's almost like the HAL 9000 of ovens. "Turn on the broil,...

Only 6 keyboards? I've got close to 60. They're all stored in my computer room.

The side tables have wide shallow drawers each containing 3 keyboards. The rest are in the closet across from the desk.

Trends and beam-springs. Happily it seems this beam-spring layout didn't catch on. I'm not going to say "I'm sure there was some logic behind it" because it's clearly absurd. https://vintagecomputer.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/IBM-3278-keyboard.jpg That layout did catch on.
