Hello all, I wanted to show you a nifty project I did this weekend.

So, I remember seeing somewhere that someone had made a pencil holder with some old floppy drives, and I wanted to try it out myself. All you need are 5 floppy disks (I used 3 1/2 size), and 12 zipties (a few extra if you screw up a couple). I made small holes in the side of the sloppy drives, and then ziptied them all together.

The results were pretty good, they aren't perfectly square, so you'll notice a bit of an indent on one of the edges, but it was a simple 20min project. Using the color floppy drives makes it look more vibrant. Here are some of the photos:

Why are they sloppy?

It looks Benetton circa 1987.

Very cool! Now I feel bad for dumping my very last floppy disks the other day.

They aren't 100% square, so one edge will be off, the other three are just fine

A “flippy” is a 5¼" single-sided floppy that has had an extra notch cut out opposite the write-enable notch so that it can be put in the drive upside down to use the reverse side.

Wait, and here is was expecting you hollowed out one of these floppy drives to make a pencil holder/sharpener:

Or were you talking about floppy disks?

Not bad. You should put the "knots" inside and use alcohol to remove the dot-matrix ink.

Yeah, on my next one I am going to put the knots on the inside. Sadly, I thought about this after I had finished the project. It is a bit more difficult when it comes to closing the zipties, but would be worth it in the long run. And I kinda like the dotmatrix ink :)
