Keyboards for Alps Keycaps Dye Sub PBT or Doubleshot ABS?

I predict you are in for a long wait.

Today, I just unboxed another IBM 5140 from eBay and harvested the keycaps. I like the Matias switches so much, I want to have dye-sub PBT keycaps ready for the Matias-switch keyboards I plan to order. The dye-sub PBT caps will be just for the alphanumeric keys; I am content to use ABS for the spacebar and modifiers.

Now I hope to reclaim some costs by selling the computers sans keycaps. I could also pull out the keyboards for those who would be interested in converting them to USB or harvesting the switches (brown Alps for the main keys and green Alps for the F-key half-height switches).

But what about the Matias wobble? I'm still to try a board of them, but the loose switches do match their wiggly reputation.

Although I keep seeing references to wobble in Matias switches, I don't notice (or perhaps don't mind or care). Whatever faults they might have, I thoroughly enjoy Matias tactile/click switches, and I find the silenced variety quite acceptable as well. Indeed, my KBP V60MTS-Click and KBP V60MTS-Quiet are worthy rivals of my HHKB Pro 2, HHKB Pro 2 Type-S, and IBM Model F keyboards. If dye-sub PBT keycaps were readily available for Matias-switch boards, I think they would fly off the vendors' shelves.

Both of those will be quite challenging to source from classic caps, though. Not impossible, but challenging. Fortunately, short right Shift was quite common, once upon a time. Often the \ key went to the right of there, thanks to its natural place being taken up by our old ungainly friend Big Ass Return!

Yeah, it's tricky.
I love it! Would you please tell me where you got those keycaps? Thanks!

Interesting you should mention that. People don't often think about the effect on sound. The BIGGER the caps the better, for a fulsome, rich reverberance. You know, if you like the sound! If you'd rather quieten things down, hmm.

As for ABS vs. PBT in that regard: I find PBT is a little trebly (higher pitched) than ABS, like for like. Perhaps a higher speed of sound in PBT? That could do it.

@bzzzzdbedub:

Classic Round 4 SPH caps from 7bit. The ancestor of Round 5. They mix quite nice too:

Try ordering their remake: Round 5a (or b or whatever he's saying now) with 7bit. And good luck. It's complicated!

You're lucky, he posted a video already and linked it on the thread where he introduced the board...
