I had another go, because I realised that while I have mapped my ‘Scroll Lock’ key to ‘mod3’, I never use it anyways, so I might as well just map ‘Escape’ to ‘mod3’, which is otherwise unused (‘mod3’, that is; and then use ‘xcape’). So I did the following:
$ cat .Xmodmap
add Mod3 = Scroll_Lock ...

While I don't know much about the keys which are different between English and German I do mess around with my layout all the time so I don't think you will have any issue as long as you can flash it for you desired layout. I personally have all my symbols on a layer, so I cant type / or . so ...

I almost forgot that Canadians also get the short end of the stick with this. Using some Toronto zip code, shipping of the Pingmaster would still be US $46.22, which is even more ridiculous than US $57.62 to Germany, considering the US and Canada are right next to each other…
