Yes you need to flash the bootloader onto the atmega32u4 with an ISP. See this article https://electronut.in/bootloader-atmega32u4/

The first thing to do is to check that pushing the closes the circuit and opens when releasing it. Use a multimeter.

Hard to see that a metal shelf could cause this. Electrostatic discharges have a high potential (V) but a really low current (A). The shelf more likely protect against ESD, since it would dispense the the discharge over the whole shelf. Do you have a lot of connected electronic devices in the shelf?...

I am assuming the firmware is compiled for atmega32u4 / 16 MHz, as I'm using a Pro Micro 3.3v / 8 MHz please make available a .hex compiled for 8 MHz... Thanks!
