Geekhack has it's strengths (numbers), and DT has it's strengths too (everything else, lol). Everyone raved about the wiki on Geekhack in the past but in my opinion it was way too messy and difficult to find information there. Maybe this will be changed now that they are using decent software and I...

I like how he somehow tries to get credit for deskthority by naming it a "spin-off". It is a bit disgraceful to see such a claim from a not so inspiring site admin who has managed to erase all attachments multiple times (this was not the first time) and then says he likes the "fresh start". GH happ...

“I won’t tolerate slander of DT,” quoth iMav, “ even though they’re all dicks over there ”. He badly fumbles his attempt at claiming the moral high-ground. Whilst moving to a new, hopefully easier-to-organise, wiki platform is a good idea, the fact that they’ve lost everything that was there before ...

Re: Best Material for Replacing Keyboard ‘Feet’

Anyone try to put sugru on keycap, to have more grip? I can’t see any reason why that wouldn't work, but you’d end up with a rubbery-feeling keycap unless you put on a *very* thin layer. An experiment — and accompanying write-up with photos — is called for. On ebay for the last 2 years there have b...

Re: Reorganising marketplace

Preventing editing out of prices post-sale has the benefit that it creates a permanent record of previous sale prices for others to refer to later. Whether this actually has value to the members of this board, I couldn’t say, but the idea appeals to me. Regarding ratings, I’m not particularly oppose...

Re: Reorganising marketplace

I like idea of using a strikethrough to indicate a ‘closed’ thread — it would make it more obvious that the item/s have sold. One idea I had was locking older, completed sale threads so they can’t be edited afterwards. That way valuable information like pricing is preserved for future reference and ...

Re: HP 8660C Keypad

Nice find. When was it made? My understanding is that HP stopped routinely making truly great hardware in the late ’80s, with some exceptions (HP 48GX, for example). Their Made in USA Voyager calculators (HP-1xC series, early ’80s) are absolutely fantastic; I have two and would recommend them to any...

Re: Deskthority T-Shirt Group Buy Interest check

I don't buy European t-shirts any more because the shirt is too short and the fit is too wide. I use only American Large. I avoid American t-shirts because the body is too long compared to the width. A lot of them resemble short dresses. I prefer a classic ‘English’ cut — sits on the hip, and sligh...

The AEK(I) in question isn’t painted, so it shouldn’t have a problem with paint being removed by the shelf-liner, but I’d be a bit concerned about whatever it is that caused the paint loss attacking the desk itself. I hadn’t realised that the HHKB was painted either, so that’s something new I learned.

Mine is basically glued to the spot. The only time I ever move it is the rare occasion when a pencil or whatever falls behind it and rolls underneath.

Re: 14 months: Broken Ducky

It’s maybe not too complicated to fix, but it is pretty poor that the keyboard has failed — in any way at all — at 14 months old. I have several heavily used keyboards that are way more than 14 *years* old that still work perfectly. Even the Compaq rubber dome I used to use at work was five+ years o...

Re: Possibly downtime because of maintenance

It’s even worse than I thought. I just checked the wiki and it’s still there, and not one attachment disappeared during this so-called “maintenance”.

If we can’t rely on you to arbitrarily lose or remove parts of this site during maintenance, what’s the point?

Lifespan of Capacitors Used in Keyboards

Since I’m stockpiling spare parts in an attempt to keep my main keyboard in working order indefinitely, it occurred to me that the one thing I *hadn’t* considered was the lifespan of the capacitors used. I know that the IBM Model M2 can appear to ‘die’ because the capacitors used in it dry out, but ...

I’m appalled by the competent and professional manner in which this board is run. Shame on you, webwit, for informing users of downtime an communicating in an effective manner. Worst of all, no posts were lost and we weren’t treated to a roll-back of several days or more. You disgust me.

I was assuming "your" as in "ripster's". Referring to ripster's post above. But nevertheless, if there's no GH wiki with the content there was before the hack, there's a significant lack of precious info. The wiki over there was dreadfully disorganised, but it did have a lot of good stuff in it. It...

I wonder if 3D scans will cause troubles with copyrights etc. I can’t see how it would, as long as you don’t claim copyright over the design itself. You can claim copyright on the *drawing* you made of the design, but not the design itself. Being as the project would be non-commercial in nature tha...
