Re: Deskthority Fundraising Campaign 2019

I concur, but I also put my money where my paranoia is and host my own email and Nextbutt on my own hardware in a data center. So, maybe I'm not wholly normal either. Don't get me ranting on GMail these days either! I do the same, but I don't use nextcloud, too messy/buggy I prefer one-app-per-task...

Re: Deskthority Fundraising Campaign 2019

Subscribed! I don't post often but I like to see these old style web boards stay around. If there's any way I can help with the technical side of things let me know. I've been a Linux and BSD admin for well over a decade for a university and before that for their physics department. I'm also crazy e...

Re: Typing Demo XL - Apple scissor switches (Apple A1423)

That's not a "Apple Magic Keyboard", BTW. Yeah the Magic Keyboard uses the even lower profile butterfly-like switches. Not quite the same they use on the current MacBooks but fairly similar travel and feel. I don't think they have the same failure rate as the laptop boards though. Still, built in n...

Re: Is Apple Extended Keyboard II good to start with?

Yes, I use one with my Mac when I have to use it for testing. I prefer other keyboards (Model Ms) with my Linux machines though. Just made a video about it and the various adapters I have laying around: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaQJDUeUTQ4 Personally I like the cream Alps and they are a bit q...

Re: Das Keyboard Model S review (Cherry MX Blue)

^ what davkol said about the S being a III. I've got a couple of Model S boards from around ~8-10 years ago that I've beat up pretty well. Both were mostly used in my lab and work. One's a Mac board and the other is the PC version without the media keys. The Model S is basically an old product and d...

Re: Model M appreciation

Whoa, I didn't know that fake Ms with blue Alps were a thing. TIL. How's the build quality vs the real deal? As far as knock offs go that's pretty sweet.

Edit: looks like they used pad printing or something that rubs off easily on the key caps in your photos.

Re: Strange Finds

Last month, I went looking and found five different makes of numpad-mice (not just brands) without breaking a sweat. That only raises the question of who in the world is buying those things? I'd never seen one before myself. My only guess would be laptop users that lack a numpad and a mouse but thi...

Strange Finds

I'm just curious, what sort of bizarre, poorly thought out or just plain WTF keyboard or input devices have others on here found in their searching for keyboards? Not really looking for normally functioning but ugly keyboards (there's another thread for that). I had this show up in a recent eBay sea...

Re: Model M appreciation

During last year, I finally managed to satisfy another self-indulgence I had been pursuing for long enough: a birthday Model M (and incredibly, after months of frustratingly fruitless searching, TWO of them showed up in the same week). I think I'm a couple of years too old to have an actual birthda...

Practical Keyboard Storage

After buying a house a few years ago my keyboard collection started growing. I used to just have a couple laying around and got rid of the ones I was done with but now I've been hanging on to more "keepers." Unfortunately I can only use one at a time (well three if you count my desk at work and my l...

Re: Focus 5001 USB

Well, partial success on the Soarer's Converter. The 5001 seems to like it OK but I have a 2001 in the same boat (doesn't work with active USB, but works with real PS/2 port) and it just freaks out the Soarer's. Random key presses, repeating keys, etc. There a special configuration for these? Tested...

Re: Alps keyboard: Matias, Custom or Ebay??

Yeah I ordered a Tai-Hao set for my AT101 project and noticed it uses what looks to be MX style stabilizer inserts. I'm going to try to use the inserts off and MX spacebar and see if that will do what I need. Did you do something similar? The stock keycaps are awful, I'd put them in the same ballpar...

Re: Alps keyboard: Matias, Custom or Ebay??

I'm by no means an Alps expert but I've got more than a few Alps boards at this point. If you're just looking for a no fuss daily driver I'd hit eBay. Matias branded boards are spendy, have a "meh" warranty and seem to have problems if the internet is to be believed. I think I prefer the older Alps ...

Re: Focus 5001 USB

Yup, pine white Alps, nice! Looks very clean, too! I used my 5001s over USB just via a Soarer's, as I recall. OK, I'll have to setup a Soarer's converter for the 180° 5-pin DIN connector then. I took it to the office today where my desktop has a PS/2 keyboard port and the board works great. I reall...

Focus 5001 USB

I recently picked up a Focus 5001 with white Alps. Even the calculator works! Looks like they may even been older complicated Alps with the slits and mould numbering too. Re: Pretty good mail day

With the Model F just be careful with the foam. If it falls apart on disassembly you'll need to fabricate a replacement since AFAIK there aren't a good sources of Model F parts like there are Model M parts. With F's I tend to take a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Model M's I'll take apa...

I've had a couple of older Das Keyboard 3's for almost a decade now. Both Cherry MX blues, one for Mac and one for PC. These were early versions of the Das 3 Professional, before they had the media/Fn keys and well before the Das Keyboard 4. I used them almost to death for work, to the point where t...

Yeah, I just figured these things were due to it being an earlier Model M. I've seen the thicker zinc (I think) coated plates in a couple with an 87 or 88 date in one the back of the case. But those could have and their assemblies swapped before I got them so who knows. Glad to know I wasn't going c...

I would wonder whether someone spilled a sugar drink into it, and if I was going to give up anyway, I would protect the circuit boards as best I could and soak the rest in water for an hour. Re: Model M Chattering

FWIW, Unicomp sells new membranes, as well as new rubber mats. If you have issues with keys failing and/or chattering, you can potentially repair yourself, but it sounds like this keyboard has been through a lot and replacing the membrane outright may be the best path forward. Yeah I've got a coupl...

Model M Chattering

I've got a 1986 Model M that is chattering on the E key. It's a very early version and the barrel plate was badly cracked so I replaced it with a new part from Unicomp. Tried replacing the spring on the E key and if anything that made it worse. I did notice that the membrane seems to be glued to the...
