80s era kanji keyboard?

I've been studying Japanese for the last year and a half and made some Japanese friends in the process. I was telling one of them about my keyboard collection and Japanese IMEs for Linux when I remembered something about an attempt at a native kana/kanji layout back in the 1980s or maybe 90s, not a ...

Re: Compiling Soarer's converter utilities

I need to compile Soarer's utilities for Catalina. I'm not a programmer. I can compile a hello world successfully in Terminal. But when I try to recompile Soarer, I get "bad CPU type in executable". Can anyone clue me in on how to fix this? Thank you kindly, S. It's been a while and I don't have a ...

Re: Unicomp SSK coming March 2020

Man, how did I miss this? Got a pre-order in because I definitely need another yet buckling spring keyboard. Among my Model Ms and Model Fs I have a black/white/grey full size Unicomp UltraClassic and it looks pretty slick I think so I'm pretty happy with the color choice.

Re: Your Most Reliable / Least Reliable Keyboards?

Least that I personally own: a few complicated Alps boards. Although I'd wager those Apple butterfly things in the 2016+ MacBook Pros could beat Alps in the unreliability department, maybe even foam and foil. Thankfully I don't own any of those personally. Most: NMB dome and slider, a couple of my m...

Re: AEK keycaps suck.

I almost always prefer PBT keycaps just due durability. Never had an particular gripes with the AEK's outside of the usual Alps steam breakage issues here and there. But those are usually from boards I've found in dumps or recycling centers that have been tossed about. Never broken a cap or steam in...

I dont need all the fancy pants stuff of nextcloud. I concur, but I also put my money where my paranoia is and host my own email and Nextbutt on my own hardware in a data center. So, maybe I'm not wholly normal either. Don't get me ranting on GMail these days either! I do the same, but I don't use nextcloud, too messy/buggy I prefer one-app-per-task...

Re: Typing Demo XL - Apple scissor switches (Apple A1423)

That's not a "Apple Magic Keyboard", BTW. Yeah the Magic Keyboard uses the even lower profile butterfly-like switches. Not quite the same they use on the current MacBooks but fairly similar travel and feel. I don't think they have the same failure rate as the laptop boards though. Still, built in n...

Yes, I use one with my Mac when I have to use it for testing. I prefer other keyboards (Model Ms) with my Linux machines though. Re: Das Keyboard Model S review (Cherry MX Blue)

^ what davkol said about the S being a III. I've got a couple of Model S boards from around ~8-10 years ago that I've beat up pretty well. Both were mostly used in my lab and work. One's a Mac board and the other is the PC version without the media keys. The Model S is basically an old product and d...

Whoa, I didn't know that fake Ms with blue Alps were a thing. TIL. How's the build quality vs the real deal? As far as knock offs go that's pretty sweet.

Edit: looks like they used pad printing or something that rubs off easily on the key caps in your photos.

Last month, I went looking and found five different makes of numpad-mice (not just brands) without breaking a sweat. That only raises the question of who in the world is buying those things? During last year, I finally managed to satisfy another self-indulgence I had been pursuing for long enough: a birthday Model M (and incredibly, after months of frustratingly fruitless searching, TWO of them showed up in the same week). I think I'm a couple of years too old to have an actual birthda...

After buying a house a few years ago my keyboard collection started growing. Re: Focus 5001 USB

Well, partial success on the Soarer's Converter. The 5001 seems to like it OK but I have a 2001 in the same boat (doesn't work with active USB, but works with real PS/2 port) and it just freaks out the Soarer's. Random key presses, repeating keys, etc. There a special configuration for these? Tested...

Yeah I ordered a Tai-Hao set for my AT101 project and noticed it uses what looks to be MX style stabilizer inserts. Re: Alps keyboard: Matias, Custom or Ebay??

I'm by no means an Alps expert but I've got more than a few Alps boards at this point. If you're just looking for a no fuss daily driver I'd hit eBay. Matias branded boards are spendy, have a "meh" warranty and seem to have problems if the internet is to be believed. I think I prefer the older Alps ...

Re: Focus 5001 USB

Yup, pine white Alps, nice! Looks very clean, too! I used my 5001s over USB just via a Soarer's, as I recall. OK, I'll have to setup a Soarer's converter for the 180° 5-pin DIN connector then. I took it to the office today where my desktop has a PS/2 keyboard port and the board works great. I reall...

Re: Pretty good mail day

With the Model F just be careful with the foam. If it falls apart on disassembly you'll need to fabricate a replacement since AFAIK there aren't a good sources of Model F parts like there are Model M parts. With F's I tend to take a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Model M's I'll take apa...
