Re: Focus 5001 USB

Well, partial success on the Soarer's Converter. The 5001 seems to like it OK but I have a 2001 in the same boat (doesn't work with active USB, but works with real PS/2 port) and it just freaks out the Soarer's. Random key presses, repeating keys, etc. There a special configuration for these? Tested...

Re: Alps keyboard: Matias, Custom or Ebay??

Yeah I ordered a Tai-Hao set for my AT101 project and noticed it uses what looks to be MX style stabilizer inserts. I'm going to try to use the inserts off and MX spacebar and see if that will do what I need. Did you do something similar? The stock keycaps are awful, I'd put them in the same ballpar...

Re: Alps keyboard: Matias, Custom or Ebay??

I'm by no means an Alps expert but I've got more than a few Alps boards at this point. If you're just looking for a no fuss daily driver I'd hit eBay. Matias branded boards are spendy, have a "meh" warranty and seem to have problems if the internet is to be believed. I think I prefer the older Alps ...

Re: Focus 5001 USB

Yup, pine white Alps, nice! Looks very clean, too! I used my 5001s over USB just via a Soarer's, as I recall. OK, I'll have to setup a Soarer's converter for the 180° 5-pin DIN connector then. I took it to the office today where my desktop has a PS/2 keyboard port and the board works great. I reall...

Focus 5001 USB

I recently picked up a Focus 5001 with white Alps. Even the calculator works! Looks like they may even been older complicated Alps with the slits and mould numbering too. I'll have to get some macro shots for the Alps experts here to let me know what I have but for now I've got a simpler question: w...

Re: Pretty good mail day

With the Model F just be careful with the foam. If it falls apart on disassembly you'll need to fabricate a replacement since AFAIK there aren't a good sources of Model F parts like there are Model M parts. With F's I tend to take a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. Model M's I'll take apa...

Keycaps make quite the difference ...

I've had a couple of older Das Keyboard 3's for almost a decade now. Both Cherry MX blues, one for Mac and one for PC. These were early versions of the Das 3 Professional, before they had the media/Fn keys and well before the Das Keyboard 4. I used them almost to death for work, to the point where t...

Re: Model M Chattering

Yeah, I just figured these things were due to it being an earlier Model M. I've seen the thicker zinc (I think) coated plates in a couple with an 87 or 88 date in one the back of the case. But those could have and their assemblies swapped before I got them so who knows. Glad to know I wasn't going c...

I would wonder whether someone spilled a sugar drink into it, and if I was going to give up anyway, I would protect the circuit boards as best I could and soak the rest in water for an hour. If it was something simple that might let you peel them apart. The thought had crossed my mind as well but i...

Re: Model M Chattering

FWIW, Unicomp sells new membranes, as well as new rubber mats. If you have issues with keys failing and/or chattering, you can potentially repair yourself, but it sounds like this keyboard has been through a lot and replacing the membrane outright may be the best path forward. Yeah I've got a coupl...

Model M Chattering

I've got a 1986 Model M that is chattering on the E key. It's a very early version and the barrel plate was badly cracked so I replaced it with a new part from Unicomp. Tried replacing the spring on the E key and if anything that made it worse. I did notice that the membrane seems to be glued to the...

Re: Model M PCB Mounting Repair

Do you still have the plastic pieces from the tabs? Maybe try to epoxy (Loctite plastic epoxy or JBWeld is usually my go to stuff) them back on. A few M's I've fixed have had the columns that hold the metal backplate up break off and I just used some JBWeld to put the little tabs back on. AFAIK they...

Re: Tell me about your experience with dome boards

I have a soft spot for NMB dome with slider and some of the (Silitek maybe?) domes sold under the Dell and WYSE label in the late 90s. They tend to be tactile but not noisy. I've got a couple of old Packard Bell boards (BTC dome and slider) as well. A good keyboard is a good keyboard in my book. I'm...

IBM Selectric III

Late last summer I picked up an IBM Selectric Model III from a local thrift store. Not really a keyboard but it certainly has that IBM heritage. Needed some work to get running, it had the usual broken transport pulley, dirt and foam that turned to goo. After a cleaning, lubrication and a new pulley...

Model F Prices

So, lately I've been watching a number of eBay auctions for Model F ATs to get a feel for what they cost. I'm very familiar with restoring and repairing Model Ms at this point but the last time I saw a working Model F was in the early-to-mid-90s on a hand-me-down AT our family was given. Sadly I don...

Re: M122 Soarer's Converter { and < keys

One other question, the key marked "Rule" in the center of the cross arrow nav, what's that addressed as by Soarers? That'd be neat to macro for a few things in vi or tmux. I map it to Scroll Lock — highly useful for me (but, then again, weirdos think I'm a weirdo). I don't think I've used scroll l...

Re: M122 Soarer's Converter { and < keys

Hi, Ihutton. This is the "hid map" I got from my M122: m122_scan_codes.jpg As you can see, the hid code you need to remap the central key of the cross arrow nav is 0x93 (LANG_4). As for the "<" key, I guess your computer expects an US-EN layout, which lacks that key so it produces a strange charact...

Re: Why can't modern Mechanical keyboard build like Northgate Omnikey?

I think it's mainly that it's no longer considered a priority to build a durable product. From what I've seen it's pretty obvious that most customers are more than willing to buy overpriced crap as long as it has RGB and says "gaming" on the front. Besides, disposability has been an increasing thin...

Re: M122 Soarer's Converter { and < keys

why you dont use hid-listen to find out the keycode? I used xev (running Linux, no Windows installs nearby) and didn't see any scan codes coming from the keys. Looks like Soarer's doesn't send scan codes from things that aren't mapped? The SECOND one is 0x64 ("EUROPE_2") and you don't need to remap...

I was going to mention that to me, it feels like the interest in mechanical keyboards has lowered since maybe 7-10 years ago. But Google Trends tell me my feelings are wrong. I think Razer and other gaming companies have co-opted mechanical keyboard to mean one of those RGB scifi font things they s...
