I actually found the term I needed to find them. It's "flat flex".

I wouldn't call that my best bet but what I might have to resort to in a act of desperation.

I went to Digikey and Mauser and I'm guessing I couldn't come up with the right search terms. I tried "membrane connector" and "ribbon connector." and got nothing. So I know that they are 16, 20 or somethings 8 & 4 pins and I haven't measured it but it looks like the pitch is .1 of an inch.

I've mapped a lot of matrices and many of them are compatible with the Model M, meaning that the the rows are all alikeand the columns are all alike, just rearranged. This means that all you have to do is swap contacts around when connecting the controller to the matrix.
