Re: [WTB/WTT] IBM Beamspring 3278 A02 or 3279

No doubt that was a high risk operation... shipping is from China, the guy has zero feedback as seller, only posting high value keyboards and some with terrible sloppily made photos, incredible if you are trying to sell a $1000+ thing online. https://www.ebay.com/sch/febin2253/m.html I won't say it ...

Re: Vacuuming out Alps Switches?

I think it won't work. Even if you can physically make the device, most dirt will be firmly stuck to the plastic and no amount of air will unstuck it without scrubbing, specially in the confined and intricate innards of a switch. Also you can end up killing your vacuum cleaner, as those usually rely...

Re: IBM 5110 find

It had an integrated QIC tape drive. Diskettes were high-capacity storage at that time. Yes, there was a model with the QIC tape like the 5100. This one doesn't have it, so it seems you are stuck to the disk drive. Maybe an external QIC unit was available, but doesn't make much sense to get that if...

Did this thing really have to be so massive? I feel like they could have shrunken it significantly without too much effort design wise. Unless I'm missing something: Yes, it makes little sense for a system you market as "portable" to do such a thing. Some possibilities that occur to me: Maybe they ...

Re: PS/2 to USB adapter PCB

I would add on one or maybe both sides of the board pads for on-board lock leds, with the same spacing as the regular model M leds. That way, add a case and a legend sticker and you can get a more compact version of what I use for my F/M-122's. Mine is just a regular off-white project box with the ...

Re: IBM 5251 terminal USB conversion (but not what you think)

Would this be possible with a 5291 terminal? It uses twinax. At the moment it has been successfully tested with some 5251's, a couple of 3196's and one 3477. The 5291 if I'm not wrong is the intermediate model between 5251 and 3196, so if it's Twinax and the terminal is operative, "it should work".

Re: Cheaper shipments to Europe

That would be nice of course, but the real problem to buy stuff from the US (at least from Spain) are import taxes (VAT, tariff and commissions), that makes that for most items you end up paying double the original cost, and that is unavoidable. If that weren't the case we would be buying keyboards ...

Also I want to comment that the first (and probably last) batch of converters is now closed, but I have spare PCB's if in the future anyone is interested. But it is so cheap to order that online nowadays that going directly that route is also a good option.

For those brave users who will receive the first batch of converters, I have added to the Python script the following key mappings: 5251_US 5251_DE 3196_DE As I have no reliable way of testing them they may need some adjustments. In the README are some instructions to modify those configurations and...

I'd suggest if you have a CGA card and don't need to keep it original to directly get any cheap 16 bit ISA VGA card off ebay. CGA is underpowered for a 5170 and the VGA card will be even cheaper than an adapter. But if you have an IBM CGA you will also have a single RCA connector in that card that i...

I like this concept of "piggybacking" the existent controller, it is clever and allows to keep the keyboard as original as possible.

How do you plan to power the original controller? From the USB? Does it require any weird voltages?
