Re: Great/Interesting Finds

Also does anyone know how to lighten a beamspring spacebar? The 5251 spacebar is twice as heavy as the one on my 3276. The most facile method is to remove the lefthand spring. The key technically does not need this spring to function as intended. A more pleasing and calculated solution would be to ...

Re: IBM 3276 versus 5251

If you value build quality and a wrist rest over layout, the 3270 is the way to go. If you value a better layout the 5250 is better. I prefer the 3270 over the 5250 but I prefer the 5280 "beamfoot" (same layout as 5250 but has a palm wrest) over the 3270. Between the 5250 and 3270, the 3270 is an ov...

Re: Keyboard layout presentation, come and tell me how can I improve it

Well I could give you feedback but it would match my own ideas on what a keyboard layout should be like, and you will probably not agree, like you did not agree with Rayndalf. This is why I said it is a personal preference. For example I do not like ortholinear keyboards and I do not like keyboards ...

Improvements are only as valuable as the person using the keyboard finds them. What works as an improvement for me or someone else may not work for you because you have a different work flow and different personal preferences.

Amazing collection. How did you get the Unsaver numpad? I did hear rumors about a buyer in Russia buying the seller's other numpad that wasn't listed. Was that you? I won the auction Really? As I recall the highest bidder pulled out and it was relisted. There were two number pads. One was an auctio...

Re: White label Model M flickering LEDs

Monoprice adapters work well unless they are faulty. In my experience, the flickering is usually caused by a bad connector cable or a bad connection where it terminates on either board. In the absence of an oscilloscope, see if you can do a continuity test on the cable, or remove the end of the cabl...

Racoons are great. They're extremely intelligent and well tempered for undomesticated animals. Some animals are considered pests because they are a blight like mosquitos or locusts, but racoons are considered pests because they are intelligent enough to get into places that we don't want them.

Re: My new keyboard came in!

It had a numpad similar to the 5251 with a 3u zero key instead of the usual 3x4 cluster on most 3277s. Looking at the original listing it seems this is what you have since the discoloration lines on the metal plate are the same. I'd love more pics of the foam container that it came in if you don't m...

Re: IBM 3278 Model A02

Well that is something I wasn't aware of, but I'm not really a fan of cardboard, any other idea on another material ? Sure, you can use any material that will lie firmly and is nonconductive. That layer just serves as a spacer for the PCB so that it doesn't touch any metal. You could 3D print a pie...

Re: IBM 3278 Model A02

I'm not sure what you mean by "too new", the keys look to be yellowed in line with the age of the keyboard. It just seems like a nice example that you have there. As some advice, I wouldn't recommend ripping off the contamination shield with the keys on like you have done because the shield will fla...

NOS Bigfoot for $299, there's the make offer button as well.
Weird that it has a Lexmark Model M sticker on the back.
Lexmark sold these NOS as late as last year black friday, as well as repaired many under warranty in the 90's.

Re: FSSK PCBs (1st round)

2. I have a feeling that if the M flippers were directly contacting a rigid pcb, instead of through a soft membrane, the key feel would change. But I don't know for sure. If it does, then this could be an improvement to the key feel without having to sacrifice any F's. Alright, but the membrane isn...

The F ET, which has a plastic barrel plate from the factory, is very similar to any other F in sound so I am not sure the barrel assembly is the secret sauce Hm I'm not familiar with the ET... I know the AT has a metal barrel plate but a plastic bottom case but I'm not sure if that's what you mean....

Re: FSSK PCBs (1st round)

I assume you mean capacitance. The difference in capacitance can be measured in theory since every object has a level of capacitance, but this would likely not work in that application because model m flippers only touch down on one point in the center, whereas model f flippers flap down on a large ...

Re: Is it possible to convert an IBM Model M to Model F?

I continue to contend that it is the interplay of tensions and compressions between multiple metal plates that makes the Model F so "alive" and makes is "sing" as people have attempted to describe it. This is interesting. I'm not sure that I agree entirely but I do think that the large pieces of me...
