Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

Thick viscosity is necessary to eliminate the stick-slip while sliding, in accordance with the paper I have mentioned, so I accordingly I assume (not *sure*) that yes, the thicker the better. Also all the good condition blue alps boards, especially 10/10 one that I have, have a very viscous and stif...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

In Russia greases use you as lubricant. /s The NLGI is not really about viscosity, is about how stiff (the consistency of) the thickener is, viscosity is how viscous the base oil is. (PFPE in your case). Can you find its TDS? It seems interesting :) Yep, sry, i mean it's stiff. As u know, there's s...

Do you have any other lube to compare it with?

Btw one more lube that I have in mind to try, is the Nyogel 774VH. But it is very expensive, like 80 euros per tube or something. Does anyone perhaps have some?

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

767A actually is a dampening grease, aviasim gamers use it for HOTAS. :) Yeap, they use it on joysticks and seems that is great for that. Precisely because of its dampening effect is why I think it might do the trick. Btw damping greases, are just highly viscous versions of regular ones. Just marke...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

No, it turns out it was just a misunderstanding due to typo. Anyway, so that patent is not a reliable source, it was just conjecture on our part. Ok that's good to know, because it eliminates the aliminum soap approach. And to eliminate any further confusion, and unecessary arguing, I will let you k...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

I am reading the patent that ALPS themselves gave to Jacobalbertus1, and I see now that it describes pretty precisely a grease, with a Silicon Oil (polymethylsiloxane) for the Base Oil having a viscosity of 50,000 to 100,000 cSt at 25 celcius temperature and mixed with an Aluminium Complex Soap for ...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

Yeap, that stem is definitely lubed. Can you also tell what kind of material is the plastic? If it is the old or the newer one? I also think that I have the same switches in an AEK, I will checked them out too.

Btw that's a nice plastic thingy you used. What is it?

Re: Alps Appreciation

The tip actually determines the temperature, because it contains a magnet which when it reaches its Curie temperature becomes a non-magnet, and that trips a switch inside the iron, turning the heating element on and off. No fancy electronics or sensors to go bad, which is probably why mine is still...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

Here is a photo of how a prelubed stem looks. it can only be seen against a light source, in an angle that is reflecting the light directly. (in non reflecting angles, it simply cannot be seen at all.) The darker areas, are the lube that has never been in contact and has dried up and darkened. Thus ...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

I had to read this a couple times. You're saying that at least some Alps switches need lubricant. However, we need to identify which key switches in the SKCM group actually came with lubricant. Now it is clear where the misunderstanding is coming from. This topic is "ALPS lubricant found", we are t...

OK, back on topic. I mentioned that when I applied Nyogel to my salmon Alps keeb, I also ultrasonically cleaned the top housings and sliders beforehand. Re: ALPS switches restoration research (draft)

Just buy a small packet of denture cleaner tablets (google it, you can find them in all supermarkets). They are very cheap and do the job well enough. ;) Put water into a bowl, insert the stems, the upper housings, the springs and the click leafs. Put a tablet in and let it do its job for 30-45 minu...

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

I didnt scrap it off; that's the point of the video. I smeared it in place, just like how you smear butter on a surface - transitioning from a semi-solid to a semi-fluid state. I believe that wax doesnt behave like that - it stays solid/semi-solid. Also powder dry lubricants that I tried (not shown ...

So there indeed are waxes for lubrication, just got across this one: Lubricating Wax https://www.klueber.com/global/en/products-service/products/klueberplus-sk-02-295/10388/ It is for industrial use though, but it claims that it lubricates well and it is great against dust and dirt. Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

Something-in-a-can is surely out of the question, IMHO. Especially for those switches which their stems have been corroded. Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

Interesting explanation of the base oil, and how "inert silicone" lube can destroy plastics. Neat trick if they can make a grease that will stay on a surface but that dust and dirt won't stick to. I'm still betting that Alps used a dry lube of some sort, but that's purely a guess at this point. Wel...
