Re: Whats up with the whole Typewriter thing

Broken old typewriters have low values.. old switches and keycaps can be expensive. It makes perfect sense.

Re: I would like to try Alps

Alps newb opinion here. I was exactly in your shoes. Never heard of alps, did not recall ever trying it. So I bought an at101w. I am still on it after months and months of daily use. I can go pretty fast on it now, but I think its given me tinnitus! I need something quieter. Still waiting to try som...

Re: Hello from a new guy!

The vintage branch of the rabbit hole isn't a bad one to do. The modern branch is, I think, the one that dooms mere mortals. Take caution there, lest you be saddled with hundreds of expensive "artisan keycaps" of dubious worth. And other such pitfalls. Old stuff tends to hold its value at worst, and...

Re: Hello from a new guy!

Question I sometimes ask myself, how much would a used model M go for if unicomp never existed... then I am glad that it all happened the way it did.

Now I wait for the original post to get edited with a strange link...

Re: Loudest keyboard out there?

As somebody who hears a selectric every day... yeah its as loud as you remember.

With a custom solenoid setup you could probably surpass it with any keyboard.. it would need to be quite a large solenoid. Speakers seems like cheating, solenoid gets a pass because its cool.

Me and my friends used to hit up downtown hi rise parking structures in the middle of the night to blade. Sometimes got chased out by police or security. Using elevators was nice so we could conserve energy and just run all night downhill. I guess blading is "uncool" or whatever now days but I don't...

I'm working on getting an assortment of 3bond lubricants. Not just for keyboards. I just like the company's product. Their products are used by Toyota and Honda if that is any indication of their quality and technology.

Very neato early 80's board! Agreed on the disgusting plywood DIY case, would like to one day try the same. I have bought a few boards from this place, mine came the same as yours. I think they had them wrapped up and waiting for years to be sold for much higher asking prices. Hence the potato camer...

Interesting reading these results. May be the case that existing wear in to the plastic is causing permanent effects that no lube can reverse? I am still waiting to try to get in what I can if I can get it in the US.

As long as this thread exists.. I am looking to try any of the new switches the youths are using. Just found out I have a board with removable switches. Its a 3rd hand board and the old ones in there are getting worse by the day. How much do the pandas cost? Where do I order some?

People say to buy a good mattress and sheets because you spend a third of your life sleeping. Well another third of my life is in front of a computer. Re: RANKING VINTAGE SWITCHES thread

I think my overall favorite switch has to be the IBM M switch. Its so readily attainable and affordable thanks to unicomp, and offers excellent feel. F is good, but the way prices are heading, its kind of a turn off for me. After all these are just keyboards. To use for the computer typing. One shou...

I like the screendoor effect but I feel like normal people won't like it. Also I don't mind the framing of it at all..

Yeah the first gull pic before the lightening. It looks like motion blur to me for some reason. I think its the missing "white" of the eye.

I don't know about damage to bokeh from sharp masks, but that pic is excellent. Background looks good to me.

I like that last pic with the data system thing. Sparklies is pretty great too. Maybe crop out the top of it?

The dark face of that gull super irks me. Like shaky hands blur lvl irk. My brain thinks his face is blurred. If he had a white area on his eye ball it probably wouldn't as much.

Re: RANKING VINTAGE SWITCHES thread

Some of the vintage black mx are pretty good, but honestly the main reason I like them is the cool variety of affordable old keyboards they come in. I don't even mind the scratchy ones if the board is cool. As 'boring standard stock' as they are, they can sound really good with the right caps in the...

What materials exactly are you guys using? I think metals would be too cold to be comfortable on cold days. What types of plastics are options?

Re: Alps Lubricant FOUND!

I may be the one who brought up 1855 in a PM conversation. Its TB description sounds, to me, well suited to this kind of use. The intent here is to lubricate sliding plastic, not metal electrical pieces. I don't know if the "discoveries or utterly alone" comment was meant as a dig, but that is exact...

One-offs are expensive no matter where you get them made. I am curious about this also, would love to hear some experiences with it. In your case, what is it you want made specifically? Stacking layers allows you to use cheaper material. Thick material costs more than thinner material. Are you talki...

Input appreciated as I do not have an engineering background. I figured a coil type spring would add too much height to the system to be acceptable. I have not yet done this bolt mod, so I just assumed so. I understand the washer spring form factors do not offer an ideal solution. But, if one select...

Sprung washer stack for bolt or screw mod?

Another vote for ortho here.. I would start over on one with as standard as possible qwerty layout. May do one day even though I am not starting over. Qwerty just make sense because as you build up your speed, that skill set can still somewhat be utilized on any of the trillioons of non-ortho qwerty...
