Re: Does anyone still make keyboards with build quality comparable to a Model F or even an M?

Please don’t tell me you’re actually comparing something that was like 250$ when it was released (700$-ish now) to something like a 40$ keyboard in 2023. Yes people still do make heavy premium keyboards—they’re custom keyboards. I’ve been waiting a year plus for a metal keyboard that’s AT layout an...

Re: Does anyone still make keyboards with build quality comparable to a Model F or even an M?

It's just that a lot of modern keyboards are being built as cheap as possible. Flimsy body, keycaps that will show signs of wear quickly, light, and somewhat prone to breaking. Lately there has been a lot of modern quality keyboards popping up. Then there is of course the custom scene, but it's oft...

Re: Are newer Kailh BOXs cap killers, too?

Where did you buy the Box Reds? That matters, because they may not actually be Kailh Box switches. And, before you even act as if I also have some secret pro-Kaihua agenda, please note that my Keychron C2 is fitted with Gateron G Pro Blues.

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

I'm not judging anyone who uses a keyboard smaller than a full size. They are just unfit for purpose for me, because having to go into a function layer to use arrow keys or the numpad is not acceptable for my workflow. Especially the numpad, because overlayed numpads are just absolutely terrible.

No one complained about my Model M when I had to do Zoom calls, or Microsoft Teams meetings when my school was still under lockdown. And I know the microphone was picking it up.

Yeah, that's great and all until you open up a text editor like Nano. I'm sticking with the arrow keys because I don't use a crippled keyboard.

Based on their opinion on the Arabic layout Logitech MX board, I would guess the OP wants an ISO layout.

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

There are only a handful of Fs that can't easily have dedicated print screen keys if you want them. All of my Fs do. There's not much to consider there. How much do your Linux systems lock up? I don't use it as much as Windows, but it is usually exceedingly stable. It is a useful thing to have, esp...

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

Another use for Print Screen everyone here isn't considering: on Linux systems the way you reboot when the computer locks up is with the SysRQ command REISUB, and SysRQ is alt+print screen.

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

Also, good lord are F122 boards rare and expensive when you do find one. That's another benefit to the Model M: they're much more common and still being made commercially.

not having arrow keys
Huh?
122-key terminal keyboards have a plethora of dedicated arrow and navigation keys, and can be mapped for more.

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

I don't use Windows, and just having a single print screen key is more convinient anyways. I also think that Big-ass enter plus 1 unit backspace is almost useless, and I had to use that layout for a long time because a lot of cheap keyboards have it for some reason, so the AT layout is definitely no...

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

Ms are scratchy _compared to Model Fs_. I've an NIB SSK, and have had many Ms of various models and vintages pass through my possession. None is as good as an F in the smoothness of travel or, of course, the sharpness of click. Fs are just so much nicer. Compared to modern made MX switches, however...

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

Model Ms are scratchy? What boards are you using? My viewpoints on things like F keys is slightly warped because I need F11 to get into my BIOS's boot menu, and I need a numpad because playing games like System Shock without it is super terrible for the many keypads in the game.

Re: Drill bit size for screw-modding a Model M keyboard?

Same. The Model M is the wrong IBM board entirely. Its reputation is an accident of history. It was just where buckling spring happened to be when the modern layout was ultimately defined. Every other buckling spring was better, but Model M was there at the right time to take the glory. I would arg...

"it's a keyboard"
Checks out. Is indeed a keyboard.
Seriously though, why would you name it that? Is the manufacturer trying to convince itself that it is, in fact, a keyboard?
