Re: German Model F AT Resurrection Journey
Do you happen to have access to a local machine shop? I think in this case, given the rarity of the board and the condition of that barrel plate, I'd consider paying somebody to sand blast it. That or spend a heck of allot of time applying and reapplying naval jelly. Rust converter probably isn't go...

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?
For $500 I'd better not be hitting modifiers for the function keys. I know, the very existence of people who prefer 60% is forcing you to fork out the silly readies. Forcing! It’s awful, make it stop, cleanse the earth of this wrongness. :P Fwiw: I’ve never paid more than 250 for a keyboard. And my...

Re: what is the best keyboard
The Kishsaver has 12 function keys, right across the top, exactly where they are on the HHKB and every sixty. Quit being Fn' difficult. :P Look at it this way: everyone uses layers. Look at what your fingers are doing when you type uppercase. Goodness me: that Shift key looks well shifty! Grown up,...

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?
The choice in switches today is completely overwhelming. And I feel like switch hopping is chasing the 1%. Right now I am typing on Glorious Panda switches. When I was looking for a tactile switch, these came up #1 on a few lists, and were in the top 5 of all the lists I researched. People are now ...

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?
I would say that Cherry MX is not a bad switch, but it is a mediocre one. It certainly doesn't deserve to be the industry standard it has become, which I think is really just because of how cheap they are to make and being in the right place at the right time. A lot of the clones I've tried are bet...

Re: Interesting Article on Chinese Typewriter
This subject is definitely interesting. Also interesting is how IBM was trying to crack the same nut at about the same time: From Wikipedia: On June 28, 1944, Kao Chung-Chin, an inventor at IBM, filed for a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and on December 17, 1946 was issue...

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?
An honest strength of MX has long been the fairly ruthless and consistent colour = key feel definition of the lineup. I know there’s some odd balls out there but 99 times out of 100 blue equals clicky, black equals linear et cetera. Getting your head around the Alps lineup is a significantly more n...

Re: Is there something about Cherry MX switches that make them more "clonable" than other designs?
I understand that with the current ecosystem of Cherry MX keycaps and hot swap PBCs, trying to make anything other than a Cherry MX clone switch will not go over well with the current keyboard enthusiast community. But what made the Cherry MX clone community get here? Why aren't there dozens of dif...

Re: what is the best keyboard
By the numbers it appears to be the IBM Model F. And since this is post #69 we all have to agree with its conclusion, because... nice. I for one am glad we've finally settled this discussion for good.
Now... what's the best Model F layout?

Re: Model F XT keycaps have a 'layer' on them?
I'm almost certain that those are not stickers. It would make sense from a tooling standpoint if the molds are multi-piece with the top part being separate to allow for media blasting (texture), different maintenance intervals, homing bumps, etc. I'd bet that the tooling fitment just had some varia...

Re: Model F XT keycaps have a 'layer' on them?
At first I thought maybe it was some weird artifact from the manufacturing process. Like maybe there was some batch of keys that had a weird lip on them. But the more I look, the more I'm inclined to agree that they're stickers and you should attempt to peel at least one off for science. For what it...

Re: Teardown - new Ellipse beamspring switches!
The Input Club's reasons for abandoning their version of switches is listed here in their own words: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lekashman/keystone-the-future-of-mechanical-keyboards/posts/3485667 It was combination of tooling expense and premature failure of metal parts. Their design was a...

Re: Carbonated non-alcoholic drinks of choice?
I used to drink allot of flavored seltzer, but got off of these recently.
If I'm going to have a soda, it's usually a diet coke, but that's a once monthly occurrence at most.. Twice a year or so, it it's available at a restaurant or deli, I'll let myself have a regular cream soda.

I'm very excited for the verdict on these. They might be too rich for my blood either way, but... man, what a dream.
