Re: 029 Keyboards on eBay...and possibly an apology...

You’re fighting the good fight. Can’t see any problem with that. (Though I was not bidding!)

Personally, I’m not into retrocomputing like this at all. Vintage boards appeal most to me for modern use. But I see the value in it, and the pain when things are split up, never to meet again. You did right.

Re: HHKB refresh in 2019?

Scotland, you meant Scotland, right? Nope. I meant what I said: Now, the real trouble is getting the damn thing into Customs Fortress Britain. When anything from outside the EU (or, come January, inside the EU too!) ships here to Scotland, if it’s declared over £15 or they reckon it should be, it’s...

Alt keys and Windows keys can be trivially remapped. It’s the physical asymmetry that bothers me.

Re: Stuff you just bought

That’s a telephoto, with macro legends on the side (as was the style for a long, long time). Hopefully its focal distance will keep you back a bit! Some distance, and therefore flatter perspective, should help capture the geometry you seek. Remember to stop it down. Try f/8+ and maybe f/16 if you ca...

Re: Unicomp SSK coming March 2020

Definitely a good thing. The black looks cool. But I’ve already got IBM vintage SSKs… Unicomp isn’t exactly renowned for its quality, compared to the originals. But, hey, I must admit they pleasantly surprised me, getting this thing going at all! Credit where it’s due. And I do like the idea of a sm...

Corner aligned, non goofy-Gorton legends, when did Signature Plastics make these? They certainly look like SA, but I thought these came out many years ago, when SP was loathe to make new legend tooling.

Re: HHKB refresh in 2019?

If the Hybrid type S really is available in black + blank, then that’s the one I’ve a hankering for. (The media shown so far, the website most of all, bamboozles me.) Lettered blacks aren’t something I have use for, though blank blacks could be quite dashing in their own way. Ultimately, I just real...

Re: What happened to the Blue Cube adapters?

Oh, this quest is for a Model M! Yeah, you have options. I have a USB equivalent to that in my SSK: one of Phosphorglow’s controllers. Elegant. The downside is if you like the original IBM SDL cable (which on DT you’re almost guaranteed to!) these replacement controllers also become incompatible wit...

Which one do you want, Mu? The expensive one, predictably! There’s a black Type-S now? Ungh… filthy, unright, taboo temptation engage. I’ve always felt my second HHKB should be the smart, black model. Now they’ve put All The Words across the top, I’m even more convinced. See, I even bought a second...

Re: [IC] GMK R4 Cherry OG 1.75u "Shift" Key (Icon Mod) - possibly with 1u "Fn" key

"Missing keys" is much too big. And split right Shift (though something I forever advocate) is much too small.

What this particular Goldilocks really needs (rather than wistfully wants) is a modern bottom row. Just that.

You know when you're on Deskthority when even a thread with "best modern" in the title yields recommendations of decades old boards. It's "modern" if it's new old stock, right?

Because you're gonna snap off the original? It's non-detachable. That's the only reason the XT isn't compatible.

6u space bar is love. 6u space bar is life I do honestly prefer it. I’ve lived with 5u spacebar for years before, as well. 6.25 verges on too damn long! And yes, it’s unsightly. That cross, too! It’s an awkward gap in the diagonal tiling that is conventional stagger. What length is the HHKB JP / JI...

Re: HHKB refresh in 2019?

Well, my Hasu controller’s been doing sterling work now for a few years. I’ve no desire to ever replace it. Besides, I like the man himself! And I adore Unimap for configuring it. I’ve done more of that than I ever expected. Deep programmability is what I’d likely miss most from an HHKB Hybrid model...

USB is indeed 5v, always, as far as I know. (Surely back in the pre-USB 3, fast charging for phones and tablets days. I don't know how all that later stuff works.) So I'm not at all sure what 12v on the label would have been about.

Your finger could have been the problem. Don't necessarily throw out your previous ideas! Test them with the tape layer in place, instead. Or the good ones at least. I liked the look of the Topre spring inside the Keytronic switch housing concept.
