Re: AEK II (Swedish/ISO) matrix

Yup. IBM played similar matrix design tricks in the 2KRO Model M membrane. I’m sure everyone was at it, even on $200+ gear like this! I was actually checking against the version in the link I gave , comparing Apples with Apples, ANSI with ANSI. There, the Commands are correctly described: both comma...

Re: AEK II (Swedish/ISO) matrix

Wee bit of a necro here, but a relevant one. I can confirm this is the same matrix on the Apple Extended Keyboard I as well as the II. I’ve got the ANSI-US model (typing on it now with Hasu’s ADB converter). Here’s a good writeup on how it works, including the ANSI version of the matrix: https://tti...

Re: Restoring 35 Blue ALPS for a 60%

Hasu’s Alps64 PCB is an elegant foundation: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=14810 I bought one, I think, in 2017. He’s active here at DT and may well still have stock. Edit: here we go. https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69740.0 He has the same username here and GH. Always helpful, es...

Re: Recommendation needed - quiet mechanical for Model M user

By necessity, I have to spend almost nothing on this hobby. So the only Matias boards I’ve used were quick borrows, including the prototype Ergo Pro Matias went to me himself for review. I banged out a few weeks worth’s work on that one, and wasn’t keen on its feel or its quirks. Definitely did not ...

But that would involve actual innovation. And risks! No, no, that’s no way to please the bean counters at all. Go with what people’s wallets have already opened for. Why lead when you can follow? Of course, I agree with you really. But there is risk. They’re playing safe, betting there’s easier mone...

Re: Recommendation needed - quiet mechanical for Model M user

Real talk, Elrick. They’re neither to your taste nor mine, but MX is solid. They’ll work and they’ll work for millions of keypresses, as sold. Matias switches now don’t. I’m not going to lie to people just out of misplaced loyalty. It doesn’t matter who you are: if you sell shit, you’re selling shit...

Re: Converting a Tandy 1000 keyboard module into USB

The ribbon cable is a good sign. Likely direct access to the switch matrix. However, according to the wiki there’s no diodes so ghosting and masking could be a problem.

Well, Matias has our good old surrrrly elephant in the room : their switches QA is for shit these days. Before anyone makes the next move in the dance, let me broach the Alps . As for a positive rec? Well, money is an object so you’ve ruled out Topre. I guess one of those cheapish full-size MX / clo...

Re: WASD Keyboards: WASD/Code v3

The RGB LEDs (too many TLAs, <spit>) are just the three lock lights? I actually like that. Backlight pachinko is not a good look for a board. But colour can definitely tell you something, all the better if included in the “programming.” More switch options are nice. Silent ones especially. WASD’s no...

I must admit I'm still at zero Topre artisans, or IBM for that matter. Fancy caps are one of the few things keeping me MX adjacent.

Re: Objective reasons for using a mechanical keyboard

Correct on all counts. A lot of it is to do with attitude, too. I’ve had very varied luck on convincing normals that keyboards are something worth thinking about. They’ve got to be in the mood for it. As with so many things in life: you like what you’re used to. Our keyboards feel wildly different f...

Hasu, I’d like to use the Num Lock LED on an AEK with your ADB converter (running on a Teensy 2). The keyboard has the light but Macs have no use for it. I’d like to tie that LED to a layer—like mouse emulation mode—so it’s a useful layer indicator. Possible? I don’t see anything on Unimap about con...

Silent reds are pretty good, damping wise. But the sliders are still scratchier than I’d like. That shuffle shuffle sound is much more apparent when the topping and bottoming out is fully damped. My silent red Filco is still louder than my NovaTouch, besides the spacebar, where they did an excellent...

Re: What's Wrong with a Thrift Shop?

Charity Shops, as we call them here, are utterly useless for computing stuff. Many don’t accept “electricals” at all. Their focus is on clothing, media and furniture. Been a while since I even noticed a mechanical typewriter in any of them! These stores are ubiquitous in this part of the world, crop...

The work board I understand but the MX greens at home? No, no. What you need is sound proofing, especially around the door! To be honest, I really do dislike clears. The work board is the one to replace with Topre. And then the other one! Not everyone likes the Topre feel. And they’re entitled to th...
