Re: Keyboards banned from work
The loudest I've dared to go and got away with is SKCM salmons in Apple M0118, and it's my current driver at work at the moment. It would be great if I could bring in board with clicky switches and no-one said anything but I highly doubt it would go that way. But I'm still tempted to take my NEC APC...

Re: Alps Appreciation
That doesn't sound like what they're supposed to feel like. I've couple of boards with pine whites in good condition, and they are quite smooth.
Have you tried cleaning any of the switches?

Re: Alps Appreciation
Finally got some of these, can't wait to have them in an actual keyboard! But I didn't get to get my soldering iron out right away so I settled for taking some photos instead. https://i.imgur.com/9JAd5o5.jpg These will probably get mounted on an Acer 6012 that originally has some white SKCMs once I ...
Re: Tried ALPS for the first time
Acer 6012 with white Alps when I was about 14. It was a beast among all the other boards I had, which were all rubber domes. Some decent Key Tronic and an Olivetti ANK-27 102 were among those but the Acer had class that wasn't matched. It was loud and had a nice solid feel to it. I no longer have th...

Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread
Are white alps worse than Monterey switches? If in good condition, I'd say white Alps are better, but it's matter of preference, especially between these two switches which are both very nice. The Montereys have lighter typing feel but the Alps give you fuller sound with more low-end with bit heavi...

Re: IDENTIFY THE KEYBOARD thread
Anyone recognize the ICL board(s) here? Worth getting? https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=94063.0 suggests rubberdome, but it's maybe not authoritative Thanks. I bought two and noticed that the second one with the red markings on the keycaps had a peculiar placed escape-key, but as far as I know ...

So, you have a Laser-branded keyboard with an FCC ID that points to Vtech.

Re: Our desktops of yore.
Cool! Similar to our setup of the time. I liked GEM better than DOS, too. Who didn't? If I remember correctly I liked DOS as much. Not because it was awesome, but because there were things to discover. I was 6 or 7 at the time, max. 8 years old on that photo. Sometimes I started up GEM just to draw...

Re: Our desktops of yore.
Here's me. The year is probably 88 or 89. The computer is Amstrad PC1640 with monochrome display and a single 360kB 5,25" floppy drive. No HD in that machine. It ran MS-DOS 3.2. The GUI that is showing is GEM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_Environment_Manager). And a dot matrix printer on t...

Re: ISO users
I'm originally an ISO user but I converted to ANSI because I felt it'd open up some keyboard possibilities. Now I just use ANSI layout even on my ISO boards. Life is good.

Alps ultrasonic cleaning
Hi, I thought I'd share my experience on cleaning some Alps switches with ultrasonic cleaner. This isn't going to be filled with exact timings or scientific measurements, just overall feelings about the whole process. Couple of months back I bumped on Apple M0118, for which I built a converter and g...

Re: What's up with Alp SKCM Blue being so hard to find?
Consider this as well, buying NOS blue alps, or any NOS switch for that matter, is putting yourself in a dilemma: do you use the switches making them not NOS anymore, or do you preserve their NOSness and never use them just to say that you have them? From my point of view, what's the point of havin...

Isn't the non-black Realforce more white than beige despite what some product descriptions say? If someone asked for the color of my Realforce, I'd say it's white.
Here it is on a white table:

So, my adventures into the weird realm of xkb aside, keycaps: I've had a quick look around and it's looking like I may still be in a similar situation to where I was with my Model M, which is that custom keycaps aren't really a thing. Don't worry, the Matias switches hold on to the caps so tightly ...

I had (have) the KBP V80 with Matias Quiet Clicks. I had couple of switches chattering after some time of use. One of them died completely and no magic trick like opening up the switch and cleaning them helped. I returned it for repair, and it worked for some time until the problems started again. T...
