Hi everyone, I've had some into my possession a keyboard, and I've tried googling and got nowhere. I remembered this forum helped me identify an IBM model F a couple of years ago and thought you might be able to help again! I know basically nothing about this keyboard!

It's not done it for the last couple of days, and the temperature has been cooler, so ambient heat really does seem to make the difference

Yes I struggle to believe it was a chip overheating, except I can't figure out what else fits the symptoms. The way it "crashes" rather than has a physical issue means its somewhere software-related, while other keyboards on my computer don't freeze.

I had trouble with room ventilation, meaning in the evenings it went up to 28-30 ish degrees centigrade! and whatever it was seemed software related, as it "crashed" and when unplugged and replugged worked until it "crashed" again. Mechanically the keyboard seems relatively sound.

Ok I'll give that a go, thank you! The keyboard needs some attention really, I think the foam needs replacing and a couple of keys don't feel right or have their second click, I've gotta save up for some maintenance I think!

Teensy 2.0++, I'd heard about problems with clones and wanted to make sure I got a decent microcontroller. I know that the ++ is slightly overkill, the guide suggested that the ++ could be needed for extensive remapping but I've since been told the 2 would have been fine.

ah yes, I wondered about the different colours but didn't look closely enough to spot the difference! My biggest pain so far has been the lack of an escape key, another thing to sort out when I've figured out the remapping

ill probably just leave them disconnected internally then. It looks to me like the foam mat has had its day, but its good enough for now, so next step is to see if the electronics work by making the soarers converter. I now have to puzzle out the instructions for that! More photos below.

By the way, how should the jumper switches be set on the bottom of the keyboard?

yes shipped just within the UK. Its a bit of a shame, i know it can be repaired but ah well

The keyboards have arrived! unfortunately the model F has been damaged during transport, dfespite being wrapped in bubble wrap and with polystyrene in the box

is it actually more ergonomic though? and if so, why didn't more keyboards come with that big border?

That seems a really weird design then. Why does it have less electronics? I read somewhere that they didn't have a full controller or something, it wasn't explained well though!

So these bigfoot boards, do they have any electronics in those big borders or are they just for comfort or ergonomics or to match existing moulds that IBM already had? It just seems such an unlikely shape for an overall design.

Ah right ok, well when it arrives I'll open it and see. What I'm worried about now is being sent the wrong one or something!

Well I can only wait and hope that the keyboard is in good condition under the grime! I wasn't expecting a Model F and I think its very unlikely I'll be able to find keycaps for it, they're so hard to find. There's literally no IBM model Fs on UK ebay at the moment.

So other than the keycaps, is anything else compatible between the model F and model M? the casing or anything like that?

Ah, a teensy ++ is a waste then? I remember reading somewhere you might want to use the ++ if you're doing a lot of remapping.

Don't worry I'm not planning on putting any new holes in the case of an F!

Rightly or wrongly I would have been happy to add a small extra hole in an M to ...

Bother, I wish I'd seen that sooner, when I thought I was getting a Model M I got a teensy 2.0 ++ (it seemed to be recommended for those wanting more macros and key remapping), and that adapter works out at about £5 with all the work already done. Being in the UK I don't really stray onto US ebay ...

So just to be clear, a soarers converter will work with this and allow remapping and macros?
