Sorry to hijack this thread but I am absolutely in-love with this trackball since seeing pictures of its construction and I'm curious:

1. If I am understanding correctly, the ball is supposed to touch and rotate the bearings, not the rods themselves, right?

You're free to call R2 bearings 3.175 x 9.525 x 3.967mm ones, of course, or try to mount PC hard disk with M4 screws. 8-)


Here R2's are sold as 3.18x9.53x3.97mm bearings ;-). Lets call them R2 lol.

Why ? Metric system is used worldwide, while imperial units are barely used outside of USA / UK (with a mix of both systems in Canada).

I was looking for optical encoders today and a 2mm shaft is equivalent to 0.079" ... Millimeters are so much more easy ...

@Ozric: If that can help, here's a picture of my Trackball PRO ball suspension. I changed the rods once since the ball carved a deep groove into them after a few years of heavy use.

Nothing fancy, just 2 classic keyboards

I would go with a split contoured keyboard. Dactyl sounds ok. But you can save time (and probably also money) with e.g. Kinesis Advantage.
You do not need to move fingers much with a contoured keyboard. But you can type with thumbs only (two finger typing) on a flat keybaord :-/

The "big" easily noticable tabs are for the plate mounting. To open the switch you have to slightly release the very small tabs on the other sides ...

The keyboard is yellowed, but it really matches the yellow from the ball (which is original colour). Next step it to make a definitive cable using a smaller AVR and a nicely sleeved ...

Very nice looking board, but ABCDE layout... Meeh . It reminds me of the train ticket automaton, it just takes me ages to type the station names with alphabetical layouts lolilol.

Not really, the sensitivity is fixed by the encoder CPR. Then you can play with the DIP switches to set the quadrature decoding mode: 1X, 2X or 4X (respectively 100, 200 or 400 CPR).

No speed nor sensitivity issue with my Trackball Pro on my new 2560x1440 monitor. I even play Path of Exile a lot with no issue.

What there any solutions to make the scrolling of an old trackball smoother? Mine is a little jerky at times. I've cleaned the ball, actaully with a mild cutting compound and its come up like new, which has helped a little.
