When I was quite fixed on keeping my HHKB in the best condition, I did use masking tape over the spacebar.
Added some nice texture, did get dirty fairly quick though, but you can easily just replace it.

If you're really worried about shine in the long run, you should maybe look into the PBT Topre ...
