Finally landed in Japan.
Thanks again Zed for the awesome work.
Lovely board, and it looks great on your desk.

Something I noticed though is that the caps lock is upside-down.

Got one too! Thought the one shown above had a DIN 5 connector before I realized my sense of scale was off.

I've AT101 caps on mine. In terms of feel and sound, it's a great combination.

Re: Leading Edge 2214 vs Northgate Omnikey 102 Gold? Which blue Alps keyboard is rarer or more expensive?

The Leading Edge DC-2214 is less commonly seen, but it also tends to have SKCM White most often and SKCM Blue rarely. Gold label Omnikeys are seen more frequently. They often have SKCM Blues and can rarely have SKCM White. Gold labels are going to drive higher prices usually because they are well-kn...

Re: Alps Appreciation

No need to debate it, really. It's your opinion based on your experience. Modern support for Alps is very limited, of course. Regarding keycaps though, Alps has many, many profiles and interesting variants if you're looking at vintage options. To find the most intriguing stuff Alps has to offer, it ...

It's not killing the community as much as it is increasing the price of entry in certain areas. Prices have been bonkers for a while now. Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

You have to understand. There are people that legitimately want new, high quality Alps caps. What it feels like now is essentially a bait and switch. Not cool. If you want to make an MX switch with an Alps click leaf, which ProWorld did first, by the way, then create a thread about that. I mean, I c...

Re: Alps Appreciation

I remembered that XMIT did an excellent comparison of spherical profile scooping depths in the past, so I had to dig that post up: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10805&p=339104&hilit=spherical#p339104 So, I got out my calipers, and measured a bunch of spherical key caps to see how deep ...

Ahh yes, this one has bamboos. I'm not sure if you checked that. That's partially why they feel like shit. ;)

The ISO one has pad printed caps and pine whites, while this one has bambi whites and doubleshot caps. Such a strange trade-off for each!

Re: Alps Appreciation

Those C. Itoh caps are beautiful! Though I somehow expected them to look "more?" spherical. They look almost flat? I'm sure it's something that needs to be experienced in person regardless. Would love a set for myself someday :D They are very subtle, a bit like SA in terms of top scooping, but a bi...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Lol. I think to get this project underway, we will need to 1) raise 100k for thick keycap molds 2) make Zeal sort of switches, where they have Alps parts but in MX stem format. this is why we need to stop humouring all these wide eyed idea guys with zero credentials and even less experience that ke...

Re: 2 Brown Alps for one Neon Green Alps switch

This trade offer is definitely not realistic. Alps SKCM Green is worth much more than just two SKCM Browns. You'd have to find someone generous. Most people who have SKCM Green already have SKCM Brown too, as it's a bit of a stepping stone and more easily attainable. Only very few have just jumped i...

Im not going to get into that any further, but just to clarify for those interested in the board. The Keycaps are indeed Dye Sub PBT I find that very hard to believe. I have never seen a Chicony with dyesub PBT. How did you prove this, through a sink test or observing yellowing? No. Acetone is the ...

Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Because moulds are expensive. My project only needs 3-4 moulds while new keycap tooling will need anywhere from 13-100+ different moulds depending on what kind of printing method is being used. Re: Reproducing Alps Keycaps (IC)

Bold to say that thick caps are overkill when the one saying it wants to recreate blue alps with no prior experience or even attempting something less ambitious.

I'd say go for thick caps. If he can shoot for blues, you can do what you want to do.

Thick all the way.

If you look a bit closer, you'll see that the keycaps have been swapped in places.

Re: Alps Appreciation

Does anyone know, if Brown ALPS tactile leaves fit in other ALPS housings? They do not, and if you shave the standard top housing to accommodate, or shave the dummy switchplate down, it's likely going to be inconsistent and not worth the trouble. You'd need a jig for it to be repeatable, and even t...

Re: Alps Appreciation

Desoldering is the best option. Alternatively, you can try using compressed air or contact cleaner to see if that helps. It might be debris or corrosion that's stopping the switch from making electrical contact. If it's worn to the point of fatigue in the contact plate, I've seen some people put som...

Re: Alps Appreciation

Just out of interest, does anybody game on their Alps keyboards as well? Or would it wear out the switches way too fast? You can game on Alps just fine. Though I rotate my boards, I've had many of my mainstays since 2015-2016 with nothing wearing out, per se. If the contact plates die, you can alwa...

Nah, I'd not spend that kind of money on it, for what it is. As for how I spotted it: I guess it's mostly just a lot of experience with Alps. When you get used to the differences between the two main types of top housings, it becomes a little trivial. Basically, the slits are fairly obvious on pine,...

Re: Alps Appreciation

This is only intended for caps with long stems. Yes, they clip on, but trying to recreate these would lead to some disappointment, as standard caps will not be able to reach a full-travel bottom out on these guards. I figure it's partly for stability, partly for dust protection, considering the stem...
