Re: Unicomp retired black 104/105 Classic models + latest on the Mini M SSK
On a different subject, I was looking around their site and noticed the following: Note: The Classic Trackball keyboards are temporarily unavailable. Check back in the 3rd quarter of 2021. Sorry about the inconvenience. https://www.pckeyboard.com/page/category/ClassicTrackball I wonder if Unicomp ha...

Re: Unicomp retired black 104/105 Classic models + latest on the Mini M SSK
As tempting as it is, I'm going to skip being an early adopter on this one, and wait until I can get my 7u Space bar. I wonder if Unicomp can still manufacture Model F flippers. If they can, turning this one into an FSSK wouldn't be too far off. Maybe that could even be a factory option. I asked th...

Re: [FS] Whitechapel keyboard
I encountered these keyboards before - the ones I tried were some kind of foam and foil switch. IIRC, the keyboard's case was metal, so it was a rather heavy and sturdy keyboard. These were intended for a Unix workstation made by Whitechapel. There's a picture and some details here: http://www.chilt...

Re: Unicomp SSK delayed, new Model M design coming
Remember that most keyboards made by commercial entities and not hobbyists use "proprietary firmware". They probably have a lot of experience with the Cypress microcontrollers in their keyboards, and have people with many years of experience of writing code for it. Switching to an entirely new desig...

Would be cool to support lock lights, although each generation of Model M had a different interface between the lights and the controller - so maybe its not feasible

Re: Unicomp SSK delayed, new Model M design coming
Delayed again: Just a quick update on the Mini M development progress. I had forecast we would be shipping by the end of June but unfortunately, we are not going to make it. The good news is I'm typing this update on the first functional model. The firmware is buggy still and not full function, i.e....

Re: Oldest IBM F AT Keyboard?
The UK-made ATs and XTs have date labels, whereas the US made ones do not. As pointed out bt JP! the PC/AT was released during August, which likely means that production would have begun a few months beforehand. The AT was not inteded as a mass market computer (I believe IBM only sold a few hundred ...

From that link... What the heck is going on with the inside of the case?

(sure, you'll basically never see this, but I would not have expected this on a brand new mold)

front side has rotation componet? I have no idea what's this used for, any idea? Re: Unicomp SSK delayed, new Model M design coming
Another thing that looks odd is that the cable comes out of the right hand side of the keyboard. But there appears to be a recessed area for the cable to come out of the centre! That jumped out at me as well. In their announcement, they said: Just to be clear, the New Model M has the attached USB c...

One thing worth pointing out is that the blue and orange APL keycaps have different layouts for different APL implementations. The orange ones are for IBM APL2, whereas the blue ones are for Dyalog APL. It may be helpful to understand this distinction if you are trying to request that Unicomp produ...

Re: IBM Model F XT vs AT key stem smoothness
Keep in mind as well that the XT and AT systems were produced in parallel between 1984 and 1987, and that PC/XT systems were produced in far more numbers (i.e. an order of magnitude more) than the AT systems. So I would expect that AT keyboards would have a similar build quality compared with the XT...

Re: Unicomp SSK delayed, new Model M design coming
I've wondered the same myself, and plan on buying one of the new cases when I buy the SSK. Note that there are different size backplates for the traditional Model M cases, and the Ultra Classic/5576-C01 keyboards - the latter are smaller and don't fit securely into the larger case. Base on the propo...

Re: Unicomp SSK delayed, new Model M design coming
I've long wondered what a 101/104-key case with the same bezel dimensions as the SSK would look like. This looks miles better than the current 5576-C01 case they use right now. My one gripe with this announcement is that SSK is using a USB-A connector on the keyboard side. This is a no-no from the U...

Re: F62+F77 orders now open! New Kishsaver+Industrial Model F Keyboards
My bet is that the left key is the original - the legends are a little thicker and less fuzzy around the edges. That's based on me zooming in on the picture, I would have difficulty telling the difference if I saw these caps on two keyboards side by side. If I am wrong, and the left is the new keyca...

The Sherwood board is interesting; they were a famous American hi-fi company in the 50s and 60s. By the late 70s, their kit was mostly made by a firm called Inkel in South Korea. Wonder if they also made the keyboard. It looks pretty similar to the Wyse LK201 clones, and similar keyboards which wer...

Re: Unicomp SSK coming March 2020
It always seemed odd to me that they didn't make the 103-key layout the default option. Since they are able to program the keyboards on their end, they could easily add an option to let you select between having two Windows keys, or Windows on the left and that useless menu key on the right. On thei...

Space key on numpad was common on the 122-key 3270 keyboards: http://livedoor.blogimg.jp/wolkenritter_nyny/imgs/1/f/1f654d7b.jpg My theory on these keyboards is that AT&T licensed the design from IBM, but manufactured it themselves. The FCC IDs for the keyboards listed Lucent (who were owned by AT&T...

Re: Question about my IBM "industrial" / "grey" Model M
The black square label Industrial Model M is usually associated with the IBM 7531, which was an Industrial version of the PC AT. It was launched in mid 1985, and most of the examples you see online are from the mid to late 80s. There's two possible explanations as to why one was made in 1990: 1) IBM...
