Caps Lock came from the days when holding Shift was a lot of work:

You used to "shift" a large part of the typewriter's mechanism whenever you pressed it. So a latch was super useful for all those HEADINGS AND SUCH that weren't easily separated ...

If you need modifiers, why not a keyboard with thumb clusters (or at least a JIS layout), palm buttons and firmware with support for dual-role modifiers?

Yeah, I love the way Backspace is remapped to CapsLock in Colemak. Its an excellent use of space and position. Prime Realestate. Why waste it on something like a CapsLock.

Where do I start?

To cut to the chase I want to hack my Filco 10keyless and permanently replace the USB cable with a PS/2 cord I have laying around.
