Re: VAT and Customs; shipping a keyboard ti USA

I can only speak of my experiences in the UK but incoming parcels will usually be held hostage until relevant import duties, local taxes and "handling fees" are paid. The exact mechanism depends on the courier who does the last leg, which is whoever the originating shipping company has a contract t...

It is SUCH a shame you cannot keep the stock cable when converting that keyboard. It's even nicer than IBM cables, IMO.

Yeah, as long as the barrel plate isn't flexing when you drill, you should be alright. At least with the Model F bolt mod, cracking wasn't a concern.

Re: Some bolt modding questions

Get a replacement but use this one for practice. Yeah, I suppose since I'm already this far I might as well. I've seen some people say that theirs works fine even with a crack after a bolt mod, we shall see. There's no reason why it shouldn't work - I suppose it's like a crack in the case. It's the...

I guess it's like anywhere you go - online or in real life. It takes you by surprise when someone is rude to you and you can't understand why. Sorry to hear about the lowballers. Re: Are there any benefits to having a mechanical keyboard if you're not a heavy gamer or aren't a power user

Plus, there's a lot to choose from. Everyone's different. I like my tanky IBM keyboards almost exclusively, whereas others can't stand them. It definitely makes the hobby much more interesting, as a lot of what people want in a keyboard is subjective. If you want something sleek, modern and durable,...

Re: bought my first model M and have a few question about modding and cleaning

I actually think Model M keyboards are super easy and convenient to clean for several reasons. I simply let the keycaps soak in boiling water with Fairy Liquid, although I'm sure there are more elegant solutions out there. :P The case does not scratch easily, so you can be as rough as you want with ...

I would say thanks, but that's not my work! Hehe.

I did restore the assembly. By that, I mean I opened it multiple times to change shit because I'm a tinkerer. Stiiiiill not 100% for me. I reckon it could sound and feel better. ;)

Black IBM Battleship Model F

So after drooling over another user's black F122, I decided to do something similar with my 4980 Model F. https://postimg.cc/gallery/3iub1ti5w/ With the help of Troy at Unicomp, I ordered a custom set of keycaps. I said I wanted as many sublegends as possible, as I love the cryptic terminal legends....

I added a bolt to the right of the spacebar barrel, just like in Fohat's F122 guide. I deprecated that portion of the guide years and years ago. I suppose I need to delete that photo with the blue tape. "I do, however, feel that a few (about 3) bolts along the longitudinal center line are helpful. ...

Re: Some bolt modding questions

Unicomp—incompetent as they are—do in fact sell SSK barrel plates. They just don't know what they are. I haven't dealt with them all that much, but the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Troy spent a lot of time helping me customise my keyset. I'll be showing it off soon when I get the (hope...

Re: Some bolt modding questions

If you decide to do a bolt mod, I highly recommend using a soldering iron with a old sharp tip to melt some pilot holes for the drill. Use the tip to melt a bit of the plastic for each hole. If you don't, it's very easy for the drill to slip off the smooth plastic and make a janky shredded-up, poor...

Re: Burn him at the stake

After ~5 years of extensive use and abuse only 3 keys had minor chips in their label. I lost the upper part of the L’s label, a third of the O’s label and half of the ,’s label. Not too bad IMO. I’ve seen a lot worse with less usage.

Imagine trying to make that sound positive.

Yeah, and if he didn't write a public review in a blog post, no one would care. But he did and he should be prepared for the comments and dissenting opinions.

I forgot to mention that the power led(I assume)on the top right corner of the olivetti is hot-swappable. It's not soldered to anything and you can pull it right out and plug it back in with a nice snap. It's kinda like the Kaihua hot-swap socket for keyboard switches but some 30 years earlier. Sma...

Re: "bad" springs in Model F keyboard?

I've had bad springs that make an inordinate amount of high pitched squeaking or buzzing or are a different pitch than the other springs. The click is created by the flipper slapping down though, not the spring. You can make it flip down and click as it would inside the keyboard just by holding a k...

"bad" springs in Model F keyboard?

So after flossing the springs in my 4980 Model F, I woke up the next day to find some of the keys weren't working. I decided to open the keyboard yet again and switched out most of the springs for the springs from this 1984 UK Model F I disassembled a few months ago. When I first got that keyboard, ...
