Converting the 4x5 numpad to a hexadecimal input area is pretty cool. If it was me, I would see about just replacing stabs / springs / hammers / keys on a model M or F to the same effect (though you wouldn't get the arrows and 6 pack moved over that way).

Thought beamspring wobble was just a function of the key cap loosening up over time on the thin and small metal tab that it mounts on.

Suppose you could; but you would need more donor switches (IE, less total boards could be built) [unless we go all Ellipse and recreate new Beamspring switches].

We should do it. Create the B62 (beamspring 62)! Custom plates, case, PCB, xwhatsit.

Same here, regards collecting. I'm into typing on keyboards. All of mine get active use. Especially the Kishy now Xwhatsit's got it back to the land of the living!

Naturally, Webwit has something even more:

Very true. I used the solenoid on / off key from an IBM 3178 board for the solenoid on my 4704.

These are mechanically the *kind* of punch he's talking about; these are commercial offerings with a lot of polish and refinement though, not a small-order machine-shop thing. To be clear, this is *NOT* one that he built and the thing we're talking about would lack some of these details. I'm not ...

I would be concerned with alignment - both in dimensional positioning for each switch hole and with rotation of the tool or plate during the punch.

Based on that image, if you put the DIP switches like the first diagram, it should work with just an AT to PS2 passive adapter.

That is very interesting that it can also do XT (it says WYSE as well, but I assume that is PS2 and not the other WYSE).
