Re: SA Retro

The £41 set you link is just the modifiers, though, and ANSI only at that. A full SA Retro right now costs 41 for mods + 41 for alphas another 37 for ISO , 15 for the numpad and whatever the shipping / customs are; which can be quite a nightmare. One of my very worst customs experiences was the one ...

Re: 8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard

Aye, having used it a while now, I quite agree with your findings. The board's downsides are its software—yuck—and its unfriendly-to-open case blocking hotswap access to many of the switches. I presume the screws are hidden under the plastic footpads. The big bezels look nice, but they really get in...

Re: Help with xwhatsit and IBM Model F AT

Is it also possible to control the Num_Lock LED with Soarer or Karabiner on Mac? No, it is not. But you’re right: it should be. As discussed in the link above, this little utility can set all 3 lock LEDs on connected USB keyboards, but the trick lies in triggering it. Karabiner doesn’t play nice. P...

Is this an issue Zealios are known for generally? I remember when they were all the rage when they first came out, but they faded from coverage before anyone had much time to put some mileage on them.

Re: [GONE] Free parts (Vortex Poker PCB, Keebio Iris PCB+plates, Tai-Hao keycaps)

Poker received. Thanks again! I'll solder in some switches and see what I make of the stock caps. They do helpfully have front legends for the Poker's rather awkward function layer on them; but I want to remap it to the HHKB function layer I have on my 60% boards, which if I succeed to then I won't ...

The NumLock key sends the appropriate "Num Lock" key code, but apparently if I want the functionality to switch the Model F's numeric pad to a cursor pad, I'll have to define that as a separate layer So, you're on Mac, and this is your first experience hooking up a fullsize mech to one, right? ;) A...

And the solution is to select xwhatsit/ibm/fat/universal in Pandrew's configurator. This gets things working-- Very good. Are you sure your controller is 32u4? As I recall, all of Xwhatsit's original controllers—including the one I installed in my AT—are 32u2. The chip makes a difference. Their hex files are incompatible. As I recall, I laid out my AT based on this starting point in Pandrew's configurator: http://35.16...

Re: Software-less programmable keyboards

Good find. That firmware looks promising, feature-wise. Though I do see it was last updated in 2018 . Maybe explains why it's still AVR (Atmega) based. That chip's miserable memory ceiling is the only reason we're still talking about kilobytes of ram in keyboards, like it's the 1970s when every byte...

Onboard remap and macros are pretty advanced functionality when you think about how to implement them. QMK/etc. would have to implement a whole new level of abstraction in order to support them. Currently, those firmwares allow arbitrary mapping of keys, with layers and macros, all of which is avail...

Re: Will this PS/2 converter work for an IBM M keyboard?

This simple question is in fact very complicated, thanks to IBM's bad choices in the 1980s about protocols and connectors. I'd point you to one of DT's many, many threads about this but the server's too broken today to conduct a search. :P My practical advice is buy them both, try them, and return w...

As the whole membrane is behind an insulating layer, what you're looking for is continuity (multimeter says "beep!") between pairs of pins. Note: they will only conduct when the corresponding "key" is "pressed". No keys held down—or rather no membrane landing spots squeezed—and no pairs will show up...
